Is this a variant design or over polished die? I can not find another like this one. The penny on the left is the "normal" ear and the forward or right ear is different. Both pennies are 2006's.
The inner ear has a different design. The last two images are the best, the last one being normal. Would one of the eighty some viewers please respond in some way. The newbie would like to know. Thanks.
Missing detail stems from two sources, grease filled die/struck through grease and die abrasion. I don't see abrasion marks, so I would say struck through grease.
Die Abrasion What happens is that since the fields are the highest point on the die, they then become the lowest points on the coin. The more the fields get abraded away, the higher the fields become on the coin. Kind of like "filling" the coin with metal in that the lowest points of the coin (fields and recesses in the devices) start rising up. The coins below illustrate this occurrence. This can occur on literally any coin and usually gets called a detached something or other. On Kennedy Half Dollars, it usually shows up by filling of the bridge of the nose although I do not have any photo's.
