Gallienus AE Antoninianus. OBV: GALLIENVS AVG, Radiate bust right. REV: DIANAE CONS AVG, Doe walking right looking backwards. REF: RIC V-1, Rome 177 (S) Since the order was changed, I told the dealer, hey I have $8 left to spend, do you have any coins for that. So, he showed me a few and I picked this one which happens to be my very first Gallienus "Zoo" coin. Not exactly top grade but I like it and it will go into my collection assuming all goes well through the mail system. Wikipedia Copy and Paste - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallienus
It's actually in a very decent grade for a Gallienus animal coin - full legends, some detail in the bust, nice round flan. Definitely worth eight bucks in my book.
Man, ya gotta love the animal coins (that's a sweet last-minute score!! ... oh, and $8 is certainly a nice price, congrats) ... I only have one Gallienus zoo coin (the good ol' panther)
Very nice coin, Steve. Within the past couple of months I have had a chance to get a Panther as well as a Centaur but passed them up for other deals, IE... filling those emperor slots.
Here's my crusty version of the same coin, which Ardatirion found in a junk bin for three bucks at the last show we went to. The moral of the story is: don't forget to bring your CNG man with you when you go to a show.
Very nice coin in general and for the price. I only wish I could go to a coin show, never been to one before.
Yours is better. I would prefer the antlers to the mint mark, but I guess that's the difference between a three-dollar coin and an eight-dollar coin.
Not Dianae, not right and not looking backwards. There are many variations. This page has the coin you describe (first under 'Doe') http://www.lunalucifera.com/Zoo/diana.html I believe yours in on the Jupiter page under 'goat left'. It seems to be an $8 coin. For twice that you might get better surfaces but yours is far better than most when it comes to legends and strike details. JA's coin also strikes me as right for $3 since the headless goat is not in high demand. IMHO really nice zoo coins are $30-$50 items and the difference between average and special is quite a bit. There is also the question whether you should expect to pay more for special species as compared to deer/goat grade beasts. The god named will always help ID the beast. There are many more not shown yet so who has the others to share? Many occur both right and left and with heads or busts so a complete set is a lot of coins. Jupiter goat Diana stag Liber panther Neptune hippocamp Apollo gryphon The question is whether we should count the wolf. Technically it is not a zoo series since it does not name a god but reads Aeternitas Avg. I posted mine in what I considered price order low to high. The position of the wolf depends on whether you add points for the left portrait. The link below has a great chart on relative rarity that explains why most of you have never seen a Hercules or Mercury. I have neither in my collection for sure! http://www.lunalucifera.com/Zoo/
Believe it or not, I noticed that sometime after losing the ability to edit the OP. What I did was copy and pasted the seller's description here. Thanks so much for the additional information about this coin. I did not however realize it's a goat and not a doe.
The OP coin is pretty nice, though I agree it is a goat. Here is mine, probably paid about 25 for it. Here's one of the Apollo Centaurs. I still don't have a Diana and several others. I really want a Criocamp, who has one of those? And who has a left facing bust of Gallienus?
GALLIENUS Antoninianus OBVERSE: GALLIENVS dot P dot F dot AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust left, holding spear over shoulder and shield on left arm REVERSE: VIRT GALLIENI AVG, Emperor walking right, holding transverse sceptre (point forwards) and round shield, treading down fallen enemy lying on ground before him Struck at Milan, 258-259 AD 2.94g, 22mm RIC 54 left[j]
I only have two. The wolf was shown above. The one below is from the early period issue as shown by Bing.
