Ok here is the scoop, I bought a neat coin that I always wanted one once I found out about it. Anyhow it is not an expensive coin so I will just start with a picture. So I win this auction and I proceed to negotiate some best offers as he had some Kennedy's I wanted. Nice guy really and he got the best of me a little on the final coin but I was still happy. I also purchased a PR64 Cameo version of the same coin above. Now here is where it gets strange. After I have paid and we are done, he tells me that this coin above was a PCGS PR67 and he sent it to ANACS to get the Type 1 designation and it comes back a PR63. He did not seem to upset about and said it happens all the time on crossovers. I was floored! I mean from what I read on here I can see PCGS downgrading an ANACS by 2 or 3 grades, but the other way by 4? I do not think he is lying at all, has no reason to....Well I guess I know nothing about TPG's now. I can not wait to get it in hand and look at it.. What say you?
If it was in a PCGS container already, why take it out to regrade it in an ANACS? Also some possibilities were that the coin was graded by PCGS during a certain period of time where they were a little bit less flexible on the grading requirements, and then re-certified during a period of ANACS which they were very strict on their grading. That's all I can think of.
Well I can understand but in our negotiations he seemed to be knowledgeable about stuff but this was mentioned AFTER we sealed the deal. He has no reason to that I can see.
I agree . Obviously we can never know. However, maybe there was surface damage , spots, enough to lower the grade over the period of time. Have to laugh though as many cross-over or re-grade because they go by hear-say rather than grade it themselves.
Well I understand the hesitation, as I too was skeptical about it. That being siad I got to thinking, I had already paid, we had discussed prices on 3 others that I bought. Here is the thing, I bought 4 Kennedys, 2 of which were NGC PR67's and 2 ANACs PR63/64. The seller obviously knows Kennedy's somewhat. He had nothing to gain by telling me that, nothing. Here read it in his on words.. This is AFTER I have already paid him. 7000 and 100% positive feedback. I think I believe him. This is what my gut tells me. I have emailed him for more information. If this is true, then that is a very large black eye to PCGS. "Hi again, You might find this interesting. But that pf 63 that You won, I sent in to Anacs to get regraded as a Type-1. It was a PCGS PR67 when I sent it in and it came back 63! This happens all the time on crossovers! "
For those who are skeptical of the story, I can understand why you are. But can you say that you have never seen PCGS, or NGC, upgrade a coin previously graded by ANACS or ICG ? Can you say that you have never seen PCGS upgrade a previously graded NGC coin ? Or never seen NGC upgrade a PCGS coin ? Or can you say that you have never seen PCGS upgrade a coin previously graded by PCGS ? Or NGC do the same thing ? And by how many points ? I already know you can't say that, not if you know anything about coins, and you are honest with yourself. Have you ever seen one upgraded 2 points ? I have, several. Too many to count even. I have even seen PCGS upgrade a previous PCGS coin 4 points, over a period of time. There are several stories, and all true, about famous coins that have gone from being graded XF to MSXX. How many points is that ? So is the reported story true ? Maybe not, but do you really know ?
So it sounds like the lower tier TPG's (or at least ANACS) are grading more conservatively in order to become more reputable and increase their customer share. Meanwhile, the top tier TPG's are inflating grades to maintain their customer share.
I had to laugh at that one as that is basically what I told him. I asked for more information such as a picture of the PCGS slab, now that would be a gold mine no?
I believe you. My coin collecting experience consists of two periods: youth and the last two years, with a gap of 30 years between. I know little of the TPG business, but I always appreciate your very astute analyses.
It doesn't look like an Accented Hair proof to me, but the images are really too blurry to tell. The hair itself doesn't look accented, but I can't see any of the other diagnostics like the missing lower left serif on the I of Liberty. The reverse image is larger, but still too blurry to determine whether it has any of the markers.
To get the attribution on the label. It's probably a variety that PCGS didn't recognize. And yes I can believe the story. As to which TPG was "right" who knows. We haven't seen the coin in hand, and maybe they are both wrong in it is something else. People seem to think that PCGS is infallible and there is no way someone else could decide they overgraded a coin.
It is not an Accented hair, it is an Accented hair reverse normal obverse....Straight G etc...no I serif..
