Specifically, where is the mintmark on the 50 cents and 1 shilling coins. I can find it on the smaller denominations but I can't find it on these. I found a post with a Google search that said it is in the hill that the lion is standing on, but even with a loupe I can't find it. And I am looking at coins that were labeled as having a mintmark by the person I bought them from, who seems pretty knowledgeable.
Just above the "1" or "50" - centered under the lion's front left foot and back right foot. Post some pics if you can.
I can see the H on one but I have three others with either an H or KN that I can't see at all. These have to be the toughest mint marks I've ever seen. I think if I scanned a photo you wouldn't be able to see the details well enough.
Well, the shillings and half -shillings that don't have mintmarks were issue by the London Mint. Some years like 1948 didn't have any mint mark. It depends on the year, as the coins were issued at different mints, Henton's (H), King's Norton (KN), Bombay (I), Pretoria (SA). The ones that do, it's normally visible at the center of the floor below the lion.
