My First CAC coin (77p IKE)....not to expensive but what the heck, I wanted one.

I found this site that had some Ikes, I saw one and made and offer and he accepted. So I took a look around and found this. I am not a big Ike collector but I have a few but not too many slabbed. I bought 5 others, all silver 4 MS65, 1 MS66.

So being a MS65 Ike, I thought this one would be a good starter to see just what a CAC means. I paid more than $23 but less than $65. This had some really nice coins on it, mostly Ikes. There was a 72S Silver MS68 PCGS that I almost bit on but I had just spent too much anyway.

What are your thoughts about how the coin grades and its value and guess what I paid, or what the premium to $23 was...

    1977 Ike Dollar Variations
    Coin Variety MS63 MS64 MS65 MS66
    1977 $5.11 $11.99 $23.00 $75.00
    1977 , CAC $65.00

I know but it has the CAC sticker. Like I said, $23 seems about right maybe a little high for a NGC, not the PCGS. I might have overpaid a bit, but what other CAC coin could I get for that price?

Why could CAC certify a MS65 IKE anyway?

I bought to have my first Bean I guess. It was not that expensive....$32.

CAC just recently started accepting Ikes for certification. Ikes are VERY tough to get 66 or higher, except the Silver and proofs. Therefore a 66 or higher Ike is going to run at least $60+.<----I am being generous with that $ figure.

All this talk throughout CT about buying the coin and not the slab, and here we have not only a slab purchase, but also a CAC sticker purchase. On top of that, if you're not a big Ike collector, I can only understand it as you going out of your way to buy a sticker hologram on a rectangular slab with a dollar inside. It's like you paid for the fancy labels and logos on that $1 pair of jeans.

I like to buy the odd slab, but, I prefer it cost less than the price of the coin + grading fees. Then, I sort of feel like I bought the slab and got the coin (usually silver or error) for free, or bought the coin and got the slab for free. There are exceptions whenever I really want a coin in my collection, but then, I usually do not attach this sort of phrase to my reasoning... "I am not a big Ike collector...".

Either way, nice hologram sticker. I'm not looking to start a fight, just trying to get the topic started...:smug:

I think that IKE photo label is for dealers that submitt 100 or more Ikes at the same time in their submission to NGC.

I understand but I wanted one to 'see' what is was all about. I do not have a 77 slabbed. I saw it and offered a price I was willing to pay. I like Kennedy's but if I had to get something else, an IKE would most likely work. I have a few of them but only 2 slabbed. I still have $120 face I collected as a kid. Still I do not think I would afford a CAC Kennedy so this was a cheap drink of cool aid. When I get it I will post my thoughts.

I'm in agreement with the other posters about drinking the KoolAid, but sometimes you have to try the shoes on to see if they fit. If you like the beans and don't pay huge premiums for them - or even if you do, well...each to his own.

At one point I collected a handful of the PCGS slabs that had presidential portraits on them because I thought (and still think) that some of them were very handsome. Is it coin collecting? No, not really, but so what?

It's a very nice coin, btw. Ike's are the first big dollars I ever collected since I was a teenager when they were issued, and you could simply get them at a bank, and occasionally in change. Very few stores used them, however - I think their size made them popular with collectors but not so much with merchants.

If you want pristine examples today, I think you've got to go with slabbed coins, since they've been picked over for so many years. Almost all of the raw ones I've ever seen at B&M's and shows are plagued with hairlines and dull luster.

I have a few raw ones that I paid $10 for so I have an idea. Mostly I wanted the 40%ers though

I like CAC Ikes a lot, and happy the OP got one. Personally, I buy the coin AND the slab AND the sticker. :wacky:

On the 76, you got the coin, the slab, the sticker, and the portrait. Now all you need is a laser show and some dancing girls. :)
