Which do you prefer? I personally like peace dollars better for no particular reason it's just easier to collect with my budget (except the 1928). Morgans seem to be more popular though. Maybe it's just because there is more of them I don't know. Tell me which you prefer and why. Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Morgans all the way. It is a beautiful design and the common dates in high grades aren't that much more then the peace dollars!
Peace dollars are more appealing to me to collect. Morgans do have a classic look and I have a mint mark set of them.
You've just answered your own question. My favorite is the Morgan, but if you wanted to collect these, there are 96 for all dates and mintmarks just to fill a Dansco, and that doesn't include the "staple varieties" like the 8TF, 7TF, 7/8TF, 78 Reverse, 79 Reverse, O/S and O/CC. The next thing you'd need to consider is whether you want to build a set with similar grades or not. Would you be happy looking at coins ranging from VG - Gem UNC next to one another? If not, then you're going to find that, just in XF, there are 5-6 coins that will easily run into 4-digit prices. Now, suppose you wanted to build your set in, say MS60. There would be 13 coins that would run into 4-digit prices and 4 that would run into 5-digit prices. Just these 17 coins could cost you $200K+. And, these are just MS60's that have hits and bag marks all over them. Let's take it one step further. The 80-S and 81-S are two of the nicest strikes in the whole series, and they are knock down gorgeous and easily affordable in MS64/65 with tons of luster. Would you be happy looking at these coins next to run-of-the-mill XF's? If you want my opinion, go for the Peace dollars. You've already stated that you like them. Chris
Two of the first coins I ever bought were Peace Dollars. A 1924 ANACS MS61 and a raw 1922. I paid less than $30 for both of them. I used to love that series so much, and when asked the age-old Peace/Morgan question, I even used to describe the Morgan Dollar as ugly. If the newer folk around here know anything about me, that would certainly come off as a surprise. I love the Morgan Dollar's design so much, and it is probably my third favourite coin series. (Behind the $2.5/$5 and $10 Indians). They are also the series I have the most experience grading, hence my signature. When it comes right down to it, there are more attractive Morgans out there than there are Peace Dollars. Finding Peace Dollar eye candy is a far greater task (somehow Paul is able to do it), and I certainly don't have the wallet for it. Plus, Peace Dollars are just too dang difficult to grade in comparison to Morgans. Morgans are sharp, no matter their strike, and things are well defined. Peace Dollars are cloudy, the obverse, at times, looks scrunched--and I don't find them particularly easy to photograph either. tl;dr - Morgans all the way!
Braggart!!!! lol. I love them both. I have a gorgeous 1881-CC MS65 in the mail and can't wait to see it in hand.
I prefer Peace dollars. I do like the reverse of the Morgans, however, which is why I bought the 2006 San Francisco Mint commemorative lol
