This one tempts me. Yes it is a lot of money, and I could buy it, or make an offer. They have it going for $4350/OBO. Tempting!!! Only 80 minted and a pop of 40, not to mention the color.
I don't collect Morgans, but for the money, I'd rather have a 93-S or a couple of high grade toned CC's. It's still a super coin though
It's an attractive example and a recent upgrade from an NGC (fatty) PR63. The mintage was actually over 800 with the two TPG combined all-grades pop into the hundreds, but in the overall scheme of things, a scarce coin and surely a fine addition for a Morgan collector. If the coin speaks to you, the cost is not prohibitive, and you'll enjoy owning her, by all means being her home.
It's a nice coin, but if I were you I'd get a cameo proof instead. And I don't really like the poor strike on this one.
Over the years I've become less and less of a fan of toned proof coins that need a certain lighting and a certain angle to be able to see the colors. Don't get me wrong, as a Morgan collector, having a proof would be awesome, but I would rather my money go into business strikes that don't require kooky tactics to see some color.
Nice coin! It's about 10% over the PCGS price guide, what's not too bad considering the unique toning. Why not make an offer?
I've always wanted a proof Morgan, but even if I could afford this one, I think I'd have to pass. I just don't like the weakness of the strike in her hair! Chris
Mintage was 833 not 80. And as mentioned that much light make you see more than normal. Is a normal slab that color in your hand?
Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of the color. I'm sure others will have a different opinion, but I don't think the color is worth the mark up.
Assuming the brightness of the pics has been adjusted, the toning would be slightly stronger but the eye-appeal should still be far above average.
I know it is the new style PCGS slab I was referring to the brightness of the scan, David Lawrence image I presume. Have had some dealing with them on make offer's before 10% to 20% back on most items I was interested in has worked for me.
I too would love to own a PF Morgan and will one day. I'm not a fan of the obverse toning. Too distracting for me. But what I want and what you want are entirely different. Does the coin speak to you? If yes, add it to your collection. If no, wait for the one that does.
I decided to pass--they won't come down enough on the "best offer" to make up for what I agree is a very soft strike. The other Morgan Proof (my 1887) has a golden color, and a superb strike, and is PR 66. I would rather get a sharper coin, with some nice toning. While this one is pretty, I can't justify spending that much on what "Books" pointed out is a re-graded PR 63--the breast on the eagle is really minimal. Going to look for a Morgan cameo proof in at least a PR 65 or better.
I think you made a good choice...as pretty as this coin is, IMHO it's overpriced and the strike is not good. I'd be afraid you would drop a ton of cash on this coin and be disappointed in the long run.
I was surprised to see the comments about poor strike. I never would have thought that, but shows you what I know. For that kind of price, strike would make a difference. Once again I learned something, but what did I push out of my brain for the new knowledge. Let's hope its not my drive home. We will find out.
