I recently came across this coin and assuming this coin is even legit, what do you think its worth? The reason I question whether it is real or not is because of a few key differences between it and other coins of the same kind I have researched online. I have taken some pictures to illustrate what I mean (sorry for the poor quality, damn cell phone pics) Pic 1 shows that the stars that border the edge of the coin are not full filled in stars, rather outlines only. Pic 2 shows that the space that is supposed to say "In God We Trust" is blank, and shows no signs of wear or tampering. And pic 3 shows the same type of thing as pic 2, where it is supposed to say "E Pluribus Unum" it is just blank and shows no signs of wear or tampering. Also the eagles chest feathers have a different pattern then that of the eagles on other trade dollars. I dont know too much about American coins and am just curious whether this is a poorly manufactured counterfeit (although putting those differences aside, the coin is about the right weight and seems to be consistent with real coins) or maybe this is a coin full of mint errors, which would be pretty cool but I'm not getting my hopes up. Thanks for any replys :thumb:
I think from just what you have posted that the coin is fake-- The photos aren't clear enough for me to see any detail but just from what you say about the stars being outlines and the missing letters and words, make it seem to me that it is fake. Speedy
Thanks, yeah thats what I assumed at first, but its a real bad fake then. I was looking at fake coin pictures online and they were usually pretty close at least, this one is pretty harsh!
I think your coin is a numismatic error coin ,not fake http://dniewcollectors.blogspot.com/2012/07/how-to-detect-counterfeit-us-trade.html
Why do you think it's a mint error? It looks counterfeit even from the blurry photos it looks fake let alone everything mentioned in the original post.
I'm going with Tom B on this one. No way that is legit. Has anyone ever heard of "Niew Dickson"? I didn't watch the video. I wonder why he thinks that is a legit error coin. Maybe he made it... ;-)
it's only my point of view, maybe right or maybe wrong, i've seen them only 2 coins on google. this is a free world so i agree with him. think different isn't hurt anyone. ))
When I buy Trade Dollars I try to buy them certified or I'll ask the seller to get it certified first. There are a lot of counterfeits and I have been burned before on them. Fool me once same on you, fool me twice shame on me.
If you have a reason to think this coin is not a counterfeit...please say so. It sure looks like a fake to me...and these coins are very commonly faked.
I was just curious what made you think the coin was genuine. I have no problem with your point of view.
While absolutely entitled to your opinion, I am not sure who you are agreeing with here; you do realize that in your link, the author is not showing an example of an error, but of a laughably poor counterfeit. His photos are simply labeled with his blog name, which happens to contain "error coins".
