Hi guys, I was looking for some uncleaned romans on ebay and I found this seller who sells them by lots, and the condition of the coins all look so good and similar to each other. I've never bought a lot of uncleaned ancients that all seemed to be in this good a condition, and all his lots look very similar. I know ancient coins are faked, but most of these coins in the listings look like pretty common romans, so would people even fake common ones? Anyway here's one of his listings (his name is detector_who) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291142091440?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT. Might just be being stupid, but you can never be too wary lol. Thanks,
Yea those coins look pretty good uncleared, especially for 21 dollars. I wonder if the pic is just meant to deceive the potential buyers though and the actually hoard is nothing like the picture.
I'm pretty sure those are the ones you get, because he has more similar lots with different coins and he mentions how the photo was done in a sidelight to pickup on better detail. It's at $21 but the bid will probably get higher. But yeah, I'm still a bit suspicious..
It shows a 14 day return policy, a good sign. No conditions on it, so you should be okay. I know its a hassle to return stuff, but at least it gives a little bit of confidence that the seller is not trying to scam you.
There are many fake uncleaned ancients but the ones I have seen have been poor style and mixed in with real but junker grade ones. These look fine. Certainly it would be possible to make fakes that look this good but I have not seen them.
I have bought from here before. Be aware that they are picked and anything decent has come out already. I also noted the sidelighting comment before I bought, so the detail will not look as sharp in hand (mine didnt). But they are most certainly genuine.
Okay thanks, and yeah I can tell from the pictures that they are mostly just common coins, I doubt there will be any of much value but it will be a good buy if it's at the right price
seems like a nice CTG Posthumous issue with quadriga in there. if they clean up a few could be worth the whole lot.
That comment applies to almost all uncleaned coins. The diggers and buyers are very adept at sorting out these. If you want to clean coins for fun or the experience that is fine, just do not expect to make money at it, at least from 99% of the lots out there.
so true...maybe you'll break even...i usually end up in the red. that's fine with me, i enjoy cleaning the coins for the sake of cleaning them. about coins in OP...they're likely all good. i purchased a batch of coins from that guy, they were all fine as far as i could tell, and of high quality. it was refreshing to get a nice batch of uncleaned coins instead of the 50%+ turd lots that are most common. i'm cleaning some now, i'll post them on here some day. i watched the seller, and tried to buy some coin off him again, but the prices went sky high (i even bid pretty aggressively). come back and check that price when the auction is over...it will be much higher than it is now.
