Just bought a small lot of world and US coins yesterday. I don't know what one of the world coins is. It looks familiar, but I don't know enough to ID it. I don't have it In hand yet for better pics. Any silver in it? Help?[IMG][IMG]

Could be a 2 mark, 3 mark or 5 mark coin (depending on the diameter) from Württemberg, Deutsches Reich. The man is king Wilhelm II of Württemberg, I think.

Edit - Have a look at this list. The diameters are in the "Maße und Gewichte" paragraph. Then scroll down to "Königreich Württemberg". Looks like Wilhelm to me ...

Could be a 5 mark coin then (see the diameters in my edited previous post). Well, there is some silver in the piece - apart from that, I don't think it is worth much. ;)

I am just going to scrap it for silver, but need to ID it first to see how much is in it. You were very helpful Chrisild.

Wurttemberg doesn't match very well. The 2 Mark silver coin is 28mm (Krause #631?), and the 5 Mark is 38mm. A half dollar is 30.6mm. So the 2 Mark is too small, and the 5 Mark appears way too big. But it is definitely King Wilhelm II.

I am thinking it might be a 3 Mark of a later type, such as Krause #635 (1908-1914), which measures 33mm. Check the diameter and we'll know for sure. Krause #635 are quite common, all worth about the same, and only slightly above bullion value in the lower grades.

They contain 0.482 Troy ounces of silver.

Except that we're talking 20th Century German, unless one can find a fragment of a date, or other identifying marks. The Germans got plenty of mileage out of that piece.

I didn't clean it. I don't even have it in hand yet. Bought on ebay yesterday.

Sorry that was an attempt at a little bit of humor. I know you didn't clean the coin.

Strange. On the page that I posted the link to, three of these pieces are listed: 2M, 3M, and 3M. The list also has the diameters. Should be easy to figure out the denomination once you have the ex-coin ;) in your hand.

Fortunately the beard shape is quite characteristic. So I don't think it could be any other state ...

Christian, my "match" comment is a result of looking first at 19th Century Wurttemberg (in Krause), which had only too-small 2 Marks and too-big 5 Marks. When I went to the 20th Century book, and saw 3 Marks just before World War I, I was pretty sure that was the coin.
