I bought this coin at the Vienna Virginia coin show last week for a few $$. It was in a discount 1/2 price box. It is a DDO#8 and had at the time what I thought to be PVC. I soaked it in acetone and this is what it came out looking like. Is there anything that can be done?
If it was PVC the acetone would have removed it, so apparently it isn't. Can't offer much help though as I cannot tell what it is from the pics.
Strange, but it may have been hsome other contaniment. I presume that the spots were not there pre-acetone? Sorry, no help.
No, the coin actually has nice overall color (the angle of the photo makes it look dull) but the green spots I guess are corrosion? I guess I'll just leave it alone and note the spots in my album.
No no no....vinegar is "acetic acid" not good for coins ....try olive oil for a long long soak. RickieB
Olive oil is acid too, just not as strong. But about the only thing that will remove those spots is an acid, so if you want them removed just get a commercial coin dip.
