1962D question on the grade. MS63 or MS65

Discussion in 'US Coins Forum' started by young_collector, May 4, 2014.

  1. I recently bought a 1962D Franklin half dollar. The grade marked on the coin is MS64 which is in the middle of 63 and 65. In the Redbook, the price difference is a lot from the 63 to 65. I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion on what grade they think this is. Thanks

There are probably a lot of collectors who don't collect this series (like me!) and so they might have a tendency to be conservative in their grading. I would think that 64/65 is fairly close.

By the way, don't depend on accurate values in the Red Book.

  5. Thanks for your opinion! And yes I agree the red book is just a rough estimate not a buying or selling price.

The 2x2 I'm looking at has MS65 on it, and I certainly think the coin could grade as such, based on the photos.

  7. I wrote 65 and 64 on it myself but when I got it it only had MS64. Thanks for your opinion!

I wouldn't write 65 on it, especially if the seller sold it for 64 money. Why not simply call it MS? Just saying...

I agree and would not write a grade on the 2x2 to start with. You might come back later and change your mind. Track it in a spreadsheet or something - then you can change as needed without having to modify a 2x2 or put it in a new one.

  10. Ok thanks for the advise.

That coin isn't uncirculated. You can see the wear on the hair behind franklin's ear. (Which just so happens to be the highest point on the coin.)

I'd call it an AU-55 at best.

I see what you are talking about, it appears there could be wear but the rest of the surfaces are so nice. I think most people, TPGs included would ignore it as cabinet friction.

This coming from someone with not a lot of experience but who has seen more than one MS66 with obvious wear.

  13. The details on the top of his head are so small that the quality of picture could not pick them up. I can clearly see the detail but my camera can not seem to focus on it. From the picture I can see what you are talking about. Thanks

  14. Should I keep it in a 2x2 or an Album?

I don't think that I could disagree more, but let me ask you this...

If you have seen 1 (admittedly) overgraded coin in a 66 holder, you want to overgrade them all?

This is NOT cabinet friction, it is wear and Franklins are hard to grade, hence why so many people overgrade them. Also, the luster is not spectacular, which is what you should expect to see on a Franklin at MS-65 or above.

This coin is AU all day long and a great example of why grading Franklin Half Dollars is not easy.

I would agree with this statement. This coin does appear to be a higher end AU to me. It has nice clean fields and is a very attractive looking coin...but it does appear to have a touch of wear.

I know you have more experience than I, so I will concede. Also, partly because I would rather this be consistently graded as an AU. Personally, I think the weak strike is more unfortunate than that small amount of wear.

I have a few Canadian coins I keep in 2x2's that are AU/MS and that works for me. Now for my albums most are circulated coins - just a few AU low MS liberty nickels. Personally whichever works best for you.
