There are literally hundreds of coins with those designations from dozens of different countries, based on a large number of design differences. For example, Japanese milled coins from the Meiji era (1867-1912) all have the characters "Mei" and "Ji". Most have two distinct characters (Type 1), but on some the characters are joined (Type 2). In other cases the differences between the types are based on different calligraphy for the same character. On another coin there are different details in the design. In other words, for each coin having multiple types, you need to know the specific details of the coin, and there is no general answer to your question.
For the coin in question, the '79 SBA, it has to do with the mint mark. type 1 is known as the blob S and type 2 is known as the clear S.
