The dead giveaway is the wear. This coin has at least 20 years of circulation. Such a rare date would of been plucked out way before that.

I not sure the "basement slabber" is an expert, but they are certainly not stupid and would of sent such a find a actual TPG.

It would not necessarily be all over the news. You are assuming the seller is informed or intelligent. What if the coin was in a basement somewhere and someone found it not knowing it's value or without bothering to check? How would the media know to publicize it if they don't even know it exists?

For the reasons explained above, I have a hard time believing you would bet your life on it. The above has had to of occurred to you. If not, then you may want to reconsider your bet.

Okay this makes more sense than "it can't be real cause it would be all over the news". If there are only 5 minted and they are all accounted for then it can't be real. BUT, there is some room for argument, however small it might be. What if there were more than 5 minted and the official record is incorrect. I would say that qualifies as room for argument.

$62K....I looked through the 'other' items. Seems to just be a garage sale stuff. I can not believe this has not been pulled. I agree too much wear, its a modified coin. His reply is classic. Think about it, you put something on the Bay and think you might get $100 or so for it and you look and the bids are at $62,000! The BS radar should be screaming!

Seller got a lot of attention now. Maybe that was the whole idea behind it....

Probably not the type of attention he should want.

Do you think we are the only people that browse eBay? Even if the owner really were dumb enough not to have it authenticated, people would be all over this by now and it definitely would be front page news - and not just on coin sites.

It's fake - 100% with no question whatsoever.

Agreed so does someone have to pay the $67,000 or whatever?

eBay is hosting that auction, bid $100k then ask them :)

My luck prevents me from even entertaining the idea.

They can pull a coin for being counterfeit if it is obviously so, regardless of whether or not the seller knows it. I think this is pretty clearly the case here, but I guess it's not impossible they found a 6th genuine one... (I wouldn't bet on it though, if that were the case the owner would probably want to get it authenticated by a TPG with an actual reputation).

So far the Department of Treasury hasn't declared any of the 5 known 1913 Liberty nickels "illegal to own" (they haven't declared them to be legal either, but have made no efforts to confiscate them). Silence equals assent to a certain degree. They were in all likelihood produced illegally but the statute of limitations for making a case for that has long since expired (not to mention the alleged perpetrators are no longer alive). Unlike the 1933 Double Eagles though the Dept. of Treasury never bothered to make a case that they're Treasury property or can not be legally owned. Go figure, because the 1933 Double Eagles were legally produced and the 1913 Liberty nickels most likely weren't... but nobody ever claimed the U.S. Government was perfectly consistent. However it is somewhat safe to assume that if the Treasury was ever going to confiscate these they would have by now. Allowing these to remain in private hands for more than 100 years and allowing them to change hands in public sales and auctions multiple times, it's probably to late to try to make a case now, a case they might not be able to win (keep in mind they eventually chose to drop the case over the one 1933 Double Eagle they eventually declared legal to own; they settled it out of court when they realized they might not have enough evidence to win the case). I don't think any of the owners of the 1913 Liberty nickels have much to worry about.

The law would have more to say about this if it were fake than if it were real, actually. It is not legal to produce a counterfeit US coin which this might be (whether or not it's illegal to own a counterfeit is somewhat of a gray area; it is illegal to knowingly sell a counterfeit but if you inform someone it's counterfeit and selling it as such, that is probably OK but I'm not a lawyer). My guess though is this is probably a genuine Liberty nickel with an altered date. Still illegal to knowingly sell it as something it's not, and even unknowingly is against eBay policy.
