i have a couple modern silver commemoratives and a few older foreign coins that i want to have graded. what is the best way to get them done? is joiningva service and sending them myself best, or do it through a dealer?
I'm new at this, too, but I think it's cheapest if you can find a friendly local dealer who will include your coins with his bulk submissions. Takes longer though.
Agreed...this is the easiest way to do it. Also, only send coins to PCGS or NGC. The other services are not reputable and aren't worth the money. The problem is, foreign coins need to be on a different invoice (at least with PCGS)...so that might take a lot longer if you go through a dealer.
But you aren't required to send it Registered. You could send it to someone for $2 and have them send it back for the same.
You could always join the ANA. Then you could submit your coins to NGC without having to pay a membership fee. Naturally, all other submission costs would apply. However, before you consider submitting any coins, you should be sure that the coins are worth submitting. Chris
Like I've said before, I really wish we could do an annual or bi-annual Grading thread on CoinTalk. Get a few mods and/or shop owners to do a couple large batches so people without access to PCGS/NGC dealers or without memberships can still have their coins graded. I'm always open to sending in coins to PCGS for anyone, and just charging the fee plus shipping back to you.
When people ask dealers or others to send in coins for them, it is easy to add up the cost of service, shipping, postage/ insurance to TPG and back. What is the intangible is the "cost" of badmouthing, posts of "fraud, over charging, switching of coins, where is my coin~ its already been 2 weeks!", blah , blah, that is the unknown result of doing someone a favor. Sure do favors for well established stand up or local members, but for many, $50 over cost is barely worth the time, annoyance , and risk. Do yourself a favor in the long run, wait until you have the minimum number of coins to make joining accessible, then join and find the small details, time, and expense of submitting, Learn the risk yourself of a lost coin, months delay, detailed or counterfeit coins to deal with the result. Then when you see a similar request, you can help others if you wish.
If you feel so strongly about it, then why don't you take on all of the responsibility, yourself, for everyone who doesn't have the money to join, doesn't know how to grade, figures their roadkill will pass muster, thinks their "grandpa's treasure" is worth a pile, expects to receive daily updates from you on the submission status, then complains when the grades come back 20 points lower and threatens to file a complaint with PayPal, da-dah! da-dah! da-dah! Chris
You can use some sense when offering this. I probably wouldn't offer the service to newer members. And I would have them send me an image of their coin so I can give them my opinion on whether it's worth it. For reasonable people, it shouldn't be much responsibility to handle. Maybe I'll update my sig.
Dude just spend the 30-40 dollars and join the Ana for ngc or join pcgs. If you have coins you want to send in this will probably be cheaper then going through a dealer. Remember you do need to give them something for their time and I personally think it is better to control the situation yourself then use a dealer. However feel free to post pics people here will tell you if it is envelope worth it for your coins
I don't know about the older foreign coins, but for the modern silver commemoratives it would be cheaper to sell your raw coins and simply buy an MS69 example of the same coin. Unless you have a commemorative with a low mintage like the Community Service, Smithsonian, or Leif Ericson, save your money on grading fees.
I belong to ANA - can you direct me to where I can get a "price list" for NGC? I've poked around on their site and can't seem to find one. Would like to submit at least 5 coins, but not sure what the costs would be and I'd like to use those to determine if it would be worth my while.
