I previously asked if I should return for replacement. This is out of the plastic Is this normal to have on the mirrored surface. Is there a certain level of tolerance before getting picky. I had to work to get the right angle for it to show and this is magnified To the naked eye without examination you don't see it
The more I look at it the more it stands out. The mint confirmed that they will cover both postage and insurance. Might call a second time to get a different person to make sure since the insurance will be over $20. What will they do with this when I return it? Keep trying to pass it off? Is this considered damaged or is there some sort of scale for damage? If damaged would they just melt it and start over?
IMO, that coin is fine. If you, as a buyer, are looking for perfection, just buy a PR70DCAM in the aftermarket.
This is what I wanted to find out. Pick 100 of these randomly off the line....if say 30 to 50 look like this then its not unusual and I am being picky. Lets say 50 to 75 have some minor imperfection then its perfectly normal. I just assumed that for the $200 to 300 premium over spot that each one would get an extra look. Are you saying that you consistantly see mint products with minor flaws? With just what you see in the picture would this grade at least PR69 or would it be lower?
Since I don't intend to sell it and I don't intend to grade next time I won't look at it under magnification. If it looks good to the naked eye I will leave it at that and be very happy to get an AGE. You know....what you don't know can't hurt you. I would still be curious what others think if they received the same coin
I doubt that the mint would even look at it any better than they ever did the first time. It would most likely get repackaged to go to someone else. Of course that means your replacement might appear worse to you than the first one.
The piece looks fine and the US Mint makes no effort to make certain these are perfect under extreme scrutiny. If you don't like it, simply send it back.
That is the concern that the replacement will have issues and then I am in vicious cycle of returns. I assumed the board would see the line between and above the 3rd and 4th sun ray (from Lady Liberty) as being unacceptable. Its not a surface issue but looks more of an issue in the prep of the coin since it can't be seen from all angles. Please weigh in with more opinions. I value the opinion and experience of this board and I am new to this game. I am just trying to feel out what is the accepted degree of imperfection.....how many rat hairs can show up in the food product before the Govt says its too much for human consumption.
I'm telling you, friend, if you don't like the hairline, return the coin. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It's like a pebble in your shoe - it doesn't bother you much for a few steps, but give it a mile and it's all you can think about. Mistakes aren't a big deal if they're cheap, but gold isn't cheap.
Good point. I am leaning this way. I just didn't know if my expectations are too high in other words if its normal to walk around with a pebble in your shoe. I just don't want to find out its normal to walk around with TWO pebbles in your shoe....I lucked out with one pebble and then I get back a pair of shoes with THREE pebbles.
If the mint can't supply you with a product you love, get a refund, and find a slabbed 70 - the extra premium will be worth it for a coin that satisfies.
I am really still trying to grasp how midspread issues are. Assume this hairline was the only thing wrong. The hairline can only be seen at certain angles and doesn't jump out to the naked eye. Would this hairline drop an otherwise perfect coin from a PR 70 to PR69 or much lower. In your opinion
I'm not the person to ask since I don't follow the grading standards, but I understand that on certain series, the PCGS requirement for a 70 is that no hairlines are visible at 4x magnification. If the same standard applies to your coin, that very visible and large hairline would certainly drop it to 69.
@West... you're getting the same advice you got in the other thread the day before on this. If you don't like the parts you are talking about now, return it. And to ensure the perfection that you are NOT going to get from the Mint's standards, to buy a coin with a certified "perfect" grade with a DCAM designation. A lot of people wonder about the Mint's standards, but really, they never seem to get involved to the same level of scrutiny as do coin collectors. I for one have received silver proofs with milk spots and scratches and seen others with scratched gold coins much more significant than the mark you've shown in your coin, they returned theirs and got new products. I have learned to order more than I intend to keep and return those that "I" deem problem free. As I said in the other thread, remember that you have only the 7-day return policy to get moving on this and the return shipping+insurance fee is just a small fee to pay for the satisfaction you'll have later on.
Like Chris mentioned above, I will order multiples of the product and, if not to my liking, the lesser products wind up in the Dansco (s). I learned a long time ago not to get OC over what you receive from the mint.......
