Are these die breaks under the cow? There are two curved upraised lines. The first one showed up better than the second, but it's also curved. I have 4 quarters that look like this. I also found a different one that says "IN GOO WE TRUST" because of a small die chip.
Yep! It's just a die break in the m/m which is pretty common. Jak, it would be a good idea in the future if you contact another member by PM if you want to discuss buying or selling. PittMom, Back to your original inquiry....... I can't tell from your photo, but does the area between the mark and the cow appear to be sunken very, very slightly? If so, I think it might be a subsurface break. I saw a lot of these when I was searching Mint bags of CA & UT SQ's. What happens is that a crack originates below the surface of the die, usually along one of the devices. The crack has expanded just enough that when the coin is struck, it leaves a slight depression. Eventually, the crack can become a full-fledged break along a device. Chris
No, that area looks slightly raised. I know what you mean about the cracks/depression. The Cow coin (for lack of a better identifier right now) has that issue as well. I have a bunch similar to this and assumed it was from grease. Here's a close up photo so that you can see that it looks slightly raised. Just noticed a tiny dot as well: What would cause that to be slightly raised? I have 4 that look like that.
FYI.....It's a Wisconsin State Quarter. Are you sure the ENTIRE area is raised? It looks like only the line is raised. It could be just a crack, but I would have to see a better and clearer close-up.
Just took a closer photo for you. To me it looks slightly raised. Yes, 2004-P Wisconsin Quarter that came from a sealed mint bag earlier this week.
LOL.. To clarify, I did know it was a Wisconsin State Quarter. I was just trying to move the topic back to the right coin vs the one with the die chip. Any more thoughts on what might have caused this?
