I can ID my notes by the "series". However most spanned a decade. Are there any resources that can pinpoint a notes year by the serial number?
Here are a few I have. This is series C, issued 17th March 1960, last issued 1978 (almost 20 years). The signer is Page, so it's between 75-78 This is series and the signer was from 1950 to 1955. Series A, 3rd issue. This was the last series. (D) The Isaac Newton note. Ran from 81-83 per the signer. We can pinpoint within 3-4 years according the signatures, but I want to know if it's possible to find the actual year.
I know that with US currency, printing date ranges can be established using the block letters and serial numbers...I'm not sure if such records are available with British currency.
Sure they are, but you would have to find out from BoE when particular notes serial number ranges were printed. I know it is easy with Scottish notes since the banks make the serial number print and date ranges available. They even make the serial prefixes available so it is possible to recognize that the banks are still holding onto previously printed ie even a decade ago notes that have not been released into circulation.
They are dated by the sequence of the serial number. Your #1 was between 1970-1980 the serial starts with Letter Letter Number Number. known as LLNN Your #2 is March 1950 and #3 is 1981 LLNN You can buy online Collectors Banknotes Treasury & Bank of England 2008 for £5.95 (US $10 ) http://www.rotographic.com/collectors_bank_notes.htm However its out of print so you might have to search eBay I`ve seen one on Amazon but its priced at $185.70
