I am wanting to get better at MS grades so I hope the experts here can point out what the grade is and what led them to the grade. Secondly, I also want some pointers on how I can improve the photographs so it will be easier for you to grade the coin from the pic. I have coin collecting software that will allow me to attach photos to the coin entry and I would like the pic to accurately represent the coin. Anyway, here is the link. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/Filmaster/coins/1936b.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/Filmaster/coins/1936.jpg
This one beautifully struck coin. I am not an "expert" grader, but I continuously strive to learn more and more each day. Here are my observations and opinions: 1. Obverse - oustanding detail of hair under wings, usually not seen with this fine of detail. Nice full braids, and mint luster. Looks like there are small hair line scratches on neck (could be a issue for high grade). No detection of any rim dings or issues. 2. Reverse - extremely nice detail, full spit bands. Nice relief of diagonal bands. Beautiful mint luster and cart wheel effect. No indication of any bag marks or any contact marks, post mint. 3. Overall I'd say very high grade MS67-68. Definitely one nice keeper. Very Very Nice!!!
The coin has one point which limits its grade in my opinion - the light scratches on the obverse. I would say it could grade no higher than MS65 FB because of this. Because of the small size of dimes, marks tend to have a greater importance when grading them.
beautiful strike and texture, but I agree with GD the scratches on the neck will limit the grade it can acheive. I think the coin is an MS-65 FSB.
So the photos are good though? Would it be better if the coin were out of the Dansco? Also, how do you know how much to deduct for something like the scratches on the obverse? If you were starting at an ms70 how do you know? Or is it just very subjective? GD, I just read your explanation in another thread concerning walkers. I get it, but are scratches weighted differently than bag marks for example or carbon spots?
The pics were fine, just next time don't crop so tightly. Try to leave a 1/4 - 1/2 inch or so all the way around the coin. You know by following the grading guide. MS65 No trace of wear; nearly as perfect as MS67 except for some small blemish. Has full mint luster but may be unevenly toned or lightly fingermarked. A few barely noticeable nicks or hairlines may be present. Sure sounds like an accurate description of the coin to me.
SO what guide did you get that from? (here is where I expose my ignorance) I have photograde but that doesn't help in MS conditions.
I personally wouldn't grade this coin anything higher than a 64. The faint lines on the neck typically aren't seen on anything higher than a 64 IMO.
