I loved these old Draped Bust coins...I think it is just a beautiful design. Although I will admit, my knowledge of varieties is minimal though. One thing I do see is the surfaces are a little concerning to me. I think it has been altered in some way (hard to tell exactly how, but some kind of cleaning). I know sometimes with older and rarer pieces the TPGs can be a little more forgiving, but it wouldn't surprise me to see it in a details holder.
It's a little darker in-hand - more charcoal gray. The pics were under direct white light. There's a little dirt around the left side stars, but I think it's only had an acetone bath at some point... nothing more.
WHAT A MARVELOUS COIN! theres no cleaning done, its just the lighting hitting the " less dirty spots" i agree with the others on the high detailing grading...
Here's a nice one... (snigger): http://www.ebay.com/itm/1803-Half-Dollar-/151290836583?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2339a2f667
OK, that's great then. You have it in hand...with photos sometimes it can be really hard to see things accurately.
Lol the only description: "It looks good" You would think for 125k he could hire someone to take a decent photo.
That's a real beauty I'd say vf 30-35 I sent in an 1806 that I felt vf 25 a couple months ago and it went 30 this is a hair nicer and more detailed then mine
Man, you have more cajones than me buying a coin like that raw on eBay! Your pictures are lovely, and the design is great -- I might just be a tiny bit worries about some "tooling" around the hair -- but really hard to tell from pictures. Good luck with the submission, hoping for the best!
It is a beautiful coin. Lots of bust coins from that era have been tooled to sharpen the devices. The obverse concerns me in that area--looks a little sharp edged around the face. Could it have been worked upon?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the coin looks altered. I just couldn't put my finger on why.
