So, I picked up this 1940 dime and every time I look at the 4 and 0, I swear they are doubled. I haven't been able to take a meaningful photo of this possible fact or illusion. I'll keep trying. In the meantime, if you guys have nothing better to do, guess the NGC grade...
You'll never see it on the scan, I'm working on the pics. My abilities and equipment are well below average. Bare with me. Does anyone know if a 40 double date exists out there as a common occurrence?
I definitely see it on pics 2, 3, and 4, but I don't have the skills to say whether it's a repunched date, or DD, or die wear...
The holder seems to have a lot of hairline scratches, especially on the obverse side which are more visible over darker areas of the coin, such as the black marks, the rims and so on. But I'm curious if there is a scratch on the coin or the holder, over that vertical black mark on the cheek? Could you put up some more pics with different angles of lighting? It's hard to see some parts of the coin to judge (e.g. the under exposed 12 o'clock area of the obverse and the over exposed 6 o'clock area of the obverse). I'm guessing these pics are from a scanner, and if so the harsh lighting isn't showing the coins surfaces very nicely.
Thanks for the new pic. It would be good to try again with day light and setting your camera for the correct lighting conditions (balance). AU58 Yeah, I think the obverse has some eye appeal issues despite how the grade may have played out higher than we anticipate because of it.
