D. Carr made only 100 thus far (according to another forum that he posted to). So, more 'bulk handled' examples coming. Keep on buying the 'bulk handled' examples, as for every one ordered, there's one less 'high grade' example produced. Also, he updated his website to state... "Final mintage (of all issues combined, high-grade and bulk-handled) will be limited to no more than 950. Orders will be accepted until June 30, or until the mintage limit is reached, whichever occurs sooner." 64 days to order, I see a probable sell out, but who knows? Keep the pressure on the 'bulk handled' versions...the 'high grade' examples WILL be a winner if it winds up being 1/3 of the mintage. I, personally, believe that more people want them that let on. These will be a winner....gotta hold 'em for a little bit before selling, but, again, as with a lot of his offerings, secondary market (ebay) proves that a lot of his items fetch nice premiums. So, keep the pressure on for him to keep minting the 'bulk handled' examples. I'm going to go get me another couple 'high grade' examples...with a June 30 cut-off date, there may be less than 950. The 'high grade' example could be the lowest minted of the 'series'. (emphasis on COULD be...without his exact mintage #'s of each version, it will remain an opinion/guess)
Already starting to show on ebay. Looks like we know where SOME of the 'bulk handled' examples went. Does anyone know anything about this seller? Seller MUST be a member of ONE of the coin forums discussing this item. The seller is blatantly misrepresenting the version listed...title states 'High Grade', yet states 'bulk handled' in the description. The seller HAD to purchase them directly from Moonlight Mint, and the seller KNOWS there are two versions...'high grade' and 'bulk handled', yet feels the need to misrepresent the item in the title. It IS a reportable violation. But I digress....listing is here.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-D-PEAC...005?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item540870bcfd Actually, the seller doesn't know what's going on. Has to be copied from a prior '64-D listing, as the description is all over the place.
Actually it's a pre-sale so he don't even have them in hand yet. Figures, another seller reaching out for some easy cash. "This coin will be pre-ordered and will come straight from the mint. Good luck bidding!"
And another one, this time, a straight auction with reserve http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-D-Dani...311?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item461eeff237 Yes, they are both 'pre-orders', I was so into the guy with the '64-D info in the description, didn't notice the pre-order statement in the BIN
Yeah, I find it hard to believe that some collectors haven't figured out that Daniel Carr has his own website where anyone can go and by his coin designs. Amazing!
Good for you! I got the $80 one just now. Had to, I lost out on the 1964's so I figured I'd get one but the cheaper one. Trying to save some scrills for the bills.
You got one of the bulk handled versions before they went 'dark'? That 'coin', for just $80, IMO, is a pretty decent deal (well, when this thread was first started, silver was pretty much $20, now it's just a breath from breaking falling under $19),but at that time, it was around 5X spot, and that's pretty good for a 'Carr coin' (if that term catches on, remember, I started it...should get a copyright on that term...lol). Congrats on getting the 'bulk handled', as he stated more were coming, but that was, what, 5 days ago?? I did go to the 'high grade' version, as I think there will be much more of the 'bulk handled' versions sold, given the price for the 'high grade' is 'bulk handled' plus 50%. edited to add......But I just have to ask, as I just re-read your post, and you state 'I got the $80 one just now."...does that mean, by 'just now' that you just received it or just ordered it? Has to be 'just received it' as they are still unavailable to order right now.
Ya know, I would never accuse D. Carr of, well, let's say doing something underhanded (hell, it's illegal, with mandatory jail time), BUT, the perfection of the pieces he makes.....he gets his hands on the proper blank strips, he theoretically could make every denomination of a real date, and NOONE would have a clue. After all, he DOES use an old press straight from the Denver mint. Knowing that a lot think what he's doing is counterfeiting, he IS capable (physically, mentally, I really don't think he'd consider it) of making U.S. Mint quality coins...and again, on a new blank, who the hell could tell the difference? Look at how exact his Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes and Kennedy halves were. Would it look like that on an unstruck blank? I STRONGLY believe it would. It's be like the Henning nickel all over again, but more precise...so precise, again, NOONE would be able to tell the difference between, say, a '98 Washie HE struck, and one that the Mint struck.....his equipment used to strike those exact same coins, and his dies are spot on....??? Anyone agree with it being able to happen, in THEORY??? edited to correct spelling
The coin image Fret posted is from DCs site. I suspect he ordered this week and it is not yet in-hand. The bulk handled coins were sold out quickly after they first became available and just this week a new opportunity to order them became a available, and since this thread started discussing it. If you read the production blog pages on DCs site you can follow how many he's minted and any die varieties he has noted. His product is not only keenly superior in production but he does something the US Mint should be doing at least on behalf of its loyal collector-customers, publishing production logs, notes and explaining in detail the behind the scenes process and changes in production. It would be a popular thing if the Mint started sharing information like this. It's hard enough to get mintage numbers published from the Mint but they ought to be able to do some tracking that's transparent and informative to collectors. Despite what someone like DC 'could do' given his skill and access to equipment, I highly doubt we have anything to worry about and having been employed by the Mint he has clearly come under some degree of their security apparatus and that he's not about to jeopardize that relationship. He's not about to try pulling a stunt like that and risking the lucrative and unique niche business and hobby he has supporting him. He's doing what he loves, serving a small customer following and earning an honest living. He is forthright about the work he creates not being legal currency, non-approved by the Mint yet allowed to exist without the word COPY stamped on his fantasy pieces because of design modifications or the fact these never existed as coins. DC is a straight shooter in these matters and is versed in the legal issues so he may continue to pursue these fantasy piece ideas without fear of persecution or claims he mislead anyone.
I bought one of the 1965 High Grade. Not to flip, but to keep. I think it's a really good looking coin.
Got mine today. It IS a very nice piece. I have no problem believing it would grade MS67, as he states. It's just about damn perfect, though, I can find NO evidence of the host coin.
"Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes". Sounds like a flaw in the system. Not having a COPY stamp on it will allow people to use it for that.
I'm still waiting for mine and checked the order status. Nothing has changed and it doesn't show as being shipped. BTW, this is an over-strike. He is not using fresh blanks for this piece. http://www.dc-coin.com/
