Not good at taking pics, but this 1881 s morgan appears to have proof fields but has lots of toning..I was wondering approx. what grade this would be as I am thinking about sending it to get graded/ any help is appreciated Shannon
Like Doug said, save your money. It's AU58 at best. You can see wear in her hair and on the cap, and the toning is not that spectacular to justify much of a premium. Chris
It is neither proof nor proof like. It is a circulated Morgan (yes, not mint state). AU 53-58 sounds about right. Given that it is one of the most common Morgans ever, grading it is a waste of time. Just for a learning experience, what do YOU see that would make it PL or Proof? To me, as an experienced Morgan person, I see it as a circulated business strike. Just curious. What I see on the reverse fields is toning, which can be very reflective, depending upon color and location. I think this is what you're seeing.
The coin looks to have some PL qualities... But this is very common for this date. It's the wear that I don't like.
I agree...this coin has a fair amount of wear. It may have some PL features...but that is pretty common with 1881-S Morgans. Best to enjoy this one as is and save your money by not sending it in.
Thanks for all the input guys, The pictures don't show it but the fields are very reflective like that of a proof coin
Agree partially. Mid range AU for sure, and to me a PL reverse. From the photo, I don't see PL on the obverse.
With these photos...I'm not completely sold on the PL either, but I will admit it is awful hard to tell with the pics. I'll bet the surfaces look more PL in hand than in the photo...my gut is telling me that.
Here are both of my 80s PL coins. I think when it is truly proof like, there isn't much question about it (especially from the incredibly well struck s mint coins of the early 1880 era:
What they all said. Compare with the image Morgandude11 supplied. I say AU58 at best, and if you are seeing proof-like fields, with the devices looking as they do, it could be cleaned, and retoned. Best to save your dough. A PL coin is easy to spot.....yours looks nothing like Morgandude11's. Shiny, yes, but not PL, and, again, I'm guessing cleaned/retoned. edited to add....this is my opinion based on not really great images (no offense to the OP), and guessing grades, from even good images, is hit or miss
Agree with what's been stated above. AU 55-58. I do like the coin though. Putting it in a slab will not enhance it's value. It will not be money well spent. I would put it in an airtite.
