You have been hunting some scarce coins and all of a sudden you have sellers offering you key date coins. Not just one or two or three but FOUR. Bear in mind that these are coins that I have been hunting for more than five years easily and they rarely pop up in auctions. One of them turns out to be a coin that I have been hunting for more than ten years!

I might be able to afford a couple but it's a killer to see that many key coins offloaded at once when hunting one is trying to look for hen's teeth.

Now what would you do? Start to offload all your duplicates? I'm quite lost for words.

It happens. I have waited years for certain National banks paper money to come up for sale - and then a whole bunch of them hit the market.

No, I hate it when you cherry pick a rare variety and there is some sort of mistake that prevents you from getting the coin you paid for. For me, and a certain variety, more than once this year. :)

I say, "YES"! Jump on that long-wait coin.

If I have been waiting THAT long to find the rarer one, I would go for it: If decades is a normal wait for this coin, then I ask myself, "How many more decades do I have left?"

Coins come and go. I acquire dups for this very reason.

Let us know what you do!

If it were me, I know that these kind of happenings only occur once every ten years or maybe even in a lifetime. I would not off-load any coins on the spur of the moment though because you will take a big hit of losses. First if at all possible, I would try to negotiate with the seller on cost and hope he will hold on to the coins until you contract with him. I would than try to obtain the cost from family members who might support you in your endevors, even if you have to pay a small percentage back. After attainment is when you should think about selling your duplicates. But in any case I would not let the situation pass me by.

been there done that. get the 1 you've waited for 10 years. what I hate is not having the money to buy it when it does finally show up. this has happened to me several times.

Here's what got me recently. I waited a long time to find a particular coin that has actually been graded by a TPG that has a higher grade than a VG. No dealer had one anywhere, couldn't find it on auctions, or on ebay. I finally got a graded one, and then submitted a raw one for a higher grade. I was excited about selling it on ebay since people seem to fight over ones like then. When I went to list mine, magically several others were listed like mine and diluted my listing. I ended up having to take a Best Offer to move it. I really thought I was going to score big....Since that day though, I haven't seen any more. I guess I prompted the other sellers to sell at the same time....

I'll post more details when I get them in hand. You would think that I would have sold an arm or a leg for them. All I can say is that they are very uncommon and if you can get these coins at Krause's book value - awesome. Let's just say that I was serious to pay three to four times, if not TEN times the book value at one stage and that wasn't enough to grab attention!

Should have a seperate page for some of the tougher coins that I accquired through the years of hoarding.

What's worse is when those coins you've been waiting for forever finally come up for sale and there are a few people who bid it up to five times what you want to pay for it.
