a local collectibles dealer has what he says is authentic: a wood box from the US mint, that was an original box that carried the original buffalo nickels. theres a buffalo on the side. He says he could get $700 for it, but he wont sell it. What price would you place on such a box?
Not saying such a thing doesn't exist, but I've not heard of it. Kinda curious though, how exactly does he define "original Buffalo nickels" ? And if you can, talk him into letting you take pictures of this box - I'd sure like to see it.
If it could be authenticated, it would be collectible. I guess you'd have to find out how many still exist. It's probably a question for a good antique dealer more than a coin collector.
with iron clad documentation and provenance he may get 7 bills for it on a good day to the right person. But it does not sound like he has any docs, so 50 bucks tops.
Wooden box, huh? For buff nickels? Yeah right. The mint never shipped in boxes, even the Morgan dollars that were found during Nixon were in their original bags, after nearly 100 years.
Correct, but they did use boxes for presentation sets and some Proof sets. They even used wooden boxes for some sets in modern times, I used to own several of them. But for Buffs ? That's a new one on me but it does arouse my curiosity.
