Hello, I know nothing about coins and my boss had this old coin that he got from his father, who he found while digging in some sand on a Lake Michigan beach back in who knows when. I've done a little google search and it appears its from Mexico, and it appears to look similar to the Cobb reales coins but I'm not sure. Any help of guidance would be appreciated. All pics are of the same coin, just duplicates of either side in case one has better lighting.
I know nothing of this coin type, but perhaps give some reasons for your suspicions, this will help the OP and also the rest of us to understand how you came to suspect this?
Okay, here goes, my meager attempt: 1) the coin should be silver, and I see what appears to be plating coming off. 2) the design looks off. 3) what is the date on the coin? 1600's? The (design/time) period looks wrong, I think it should be a cob. 4) It LOOKS bad. 5) Look around the hole, it looks like base metal which would indicate that the center (at least) is lead.
90% chances it's a copy . Cobb coins that far north are rarely found . Ole Mexico City mint didn't get a die design change til 1650. Most likely a copy or Jewelry piece . Take it to a experience expert . No one @CoinTalk is a experience expert.
