I wouldn't say I actually collect proof and mint sets, but I have quite a few. Random dates from the 60's, 80's and 90's.

As with many, I started collecting Proof and Mint sets with the state quarters. I have all the proofs from 1999 on and most of the mint sets from then (air head is the only reason I don't have all of them :).

Pre-1999, I am slowly adding other years. Probably will not make a complete collection, but fun to see how far I get.

I dont have a complete set but I do have most everything from 1955 to date. Why? I havent figured out yet. But, I still continue to order them. I should of learned something back in the 70's and 80's. Wait and get them in the aftermarket. I know that there are far to many of them now and I think that the hobby will pay dearly in a few years for the flood we have going on now.

P's, D's, S's, W's, Silver, Clad, Quarters, Sets, Bags, Rolls, ASE, a zillion Commeratives, etc.....

Also does NGC or PCGS grade and slab Proof and Mint sets as a whole???

I know they do indivdually, but that kind of breaks them up as a set to me... I'd rather have them as all in a set/holder than sepperate...

I thought about getting some of mine graded, but thats gonna add up quick...

I'm like Adam. I have all proof and mint sets from 1999 -2006. Whenever I see a proof or mint set selling at a price too good to pass up, I buy it. Thanks to this "impulse" buying I have over 3 boxes (176 sets) of assorted dates.

Have the sets slabbed? Never in a million years!!

Proof sets 1954 through 2006, mint sets not as complete. Started collecting them way back when, and never stopped! I don't consider them as investment-grade, strictly for fun. Probably will fill in some of the older sets one of these days.

Here is a Mint Set Trivia Question.....

What was the ony What year was the only year a Mint Set to come with a coin that had a W Mint Mark???

    And what coin was it???

Also, I think it was only released in this Mint set, not actually Circulated.... But it'd be cool to find one in your change though....

I just read this somewhere and looked it up... So far, it looks true, if so, thats pretty interesting...

I'm gonna have to see if I can land one....

I have a mint and proof set collection but I broke them out and put them in my albums. All of the coins in my dime, nickel, quarter, half books are from 1964 to present are from Mint and proof sets. The 30's 40's 50's are mostly lightly circulated but I try to go back and upgrade from time to time.

Hey, I have few of them. Actually I have quite a few of those.

When you see the sets at shows, flea markets, etc., ALWAYS check to make sure the dime is in there. Since the dime was packaged individually many were removed and sold separately, slabbed or just lost and then the sets are resold to unsuspecting buyers minus the dime. So many were removed that you could buy rolls of them soon after their release.

I am a big proof set lover. Right now I have 1954 to date, but my real passion is for the sets 1964 and older. My goal is to have completed set from 1950 to 1964 before I retire.
I am not a huge fan of proof sets in the orginal packaging because their beauty isn't really that impressive to me in this state.

Should I get super rich one day I'll have the 1936 - 1942 sets as well. Until then I settle for getting a cent here and a nickel there from these years.

As far as mint sets I'll collect any year at a good price but prefer 1964 and older sets. These sets I also prefer in break out form. Original package sets get way to expensive going into the mid to early 50's and older for my wallet. So I put them together (BU) that is. It is a lot of fun tracking down the ones I lack and acquiring ones to start a new year/mint.

every proof set from 1996 to present, incl 4 2001's i bought as an investment (ka-ching, got lucky there) and then random ones from the 80' and 70's. Plus a 1996 mint set, for the dime

Hello Smullen, I collect proof and mint sets. I have proof sets from 1958 to present and mint sets from 1953 to present. I have also put together circulated sets (2 of each year) from 1936 to 1958. I have proof sets from the 60's (61,62,63,64) that have never been opened. I have around 15 to 25 sets of each year in the 60's I've mentioned. I like collecting the 1776/1976 Commerative Silver Mint sets (three coin issue) most of this issue was shipped in the dark red enevolpe with a cardboard insert that holds the three coins that has a blue, red, and white stripe on it. Ther was however another version of envelope that the 1776/1976 Commerative mint set was shipped in and thats an envelope thats basically all white with an out line of a window in red looking at a winter scene of Independence Hall in red. I've been looking for this issue of envelope for several years now and haven't had any luck finding one. Proof and Mint sets are fun to collect and its also a good way to introduce children and young adults to the hobby of coin collecting. Michael/starnote

Old Silver I know you hate getting coins slabbed but the longer you wait the less chance you have of getting any 70's. Wouldn't you like to hold some nice, newly slabbed 70's from your collection?

    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

All of my coins are 70's to me!:D

I have held some, even own a few and if I pull out a coin to show to a friend, it sure isn't one of those. I have never taken interest in this current frenzy over slabbed so-called 70's coins. Too me it is just another scam by the TPG's to make money. It just seems funny that as this modern craze to possess the "perfect coin" grows so do the percentages of them showing up suddenly. Hmmm.

It used to be that die-hard collectors would say that a true perfect coin didn't exist, now they are showing up everywhere, everyone thinks they have one in their set and the TPG's are loving it! Coins, sets are being sent in that would never have been considered to be graded before this frenzy and all the TPG's have to do is send out a few "70" labels now and then, sit back and watch their profits soar. It's simple. The TPG's are in the business to make money and if the coins don't come in, that's bad for business. Therefore, they are going to do whatever it takes to keep customers happy and keep the money rolling in.

Remember, ALL of my coins are perfect and I don't have to pay someone to tell me that! Just because the presidents on the coins are dead, doesn't mean they belong in a coffin!!
