I agree with the posters on that thread who are calling it a hoax. It looks like it's simply a matter of viewing angles through the capsule.

If anyone wants to send me one, I'll be happy to try to reproduce the effect. :)

Sure, send one to Jeff. The old disappearing coin trick. :D

Personally I still like the idea of using these coins to jam coinstar machines:vamp:

Before you go that far, check it real carefully to make sure that it hasn't been autographed by Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth.

Ladies & Gentlemen, I just found the real deal.
It's even signed by former Mint Director Edmund Moy, because apparently he was the one causing these errors!

  12. Looks more and more like an error in the capsule and not the coin.

Error in the capsule? Can you explain a bit more? I don't understand how that would "hide" the mint mark?

  14. The guy with the error on the mintnewsblog forum (Steve?) came forward and said that it may be that the capsule is distorted and covering the mint mark as opposed to missing a mint mark. Check out this and his post 4/14/14 at 6:37pm:

  15. From mintnewsblog.com:

Update: The coin was sent to NGC for evaluation and after some examination it was found that the coin was not centered in the capsule which obscured the visibility of the mint mark. The coin is not missing the mint mark.

He really sent it off to NGC without opening the capsule? O... kay. I hope the attention he's gotten is worth more to him than the grading fee.

  19. Well at least he didn't claim that it was an M (instead of a W) mint mark and then realize he was holding the coin upside down...lol. :confused:o_O:bucktooth::jawdrop:
