if the design is used for the ASE, "justice- integrity-service" would probably be replaced with "one ounce .999 fine silver"
Outside of the reverse changing in 1959, having four designs in 2009 and a new design in 2010. The obverse is basically the same, but the coin has had several changes.
Josh, the obverse designs of the late 18th through mid-20th century are considered allegorical representations of Liberty. Some of these were influenced by French medallists of the period. Did you know that Augustus Saint-Gaudens studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris for several years? Chris
Yes I am sure we are all well aware of that Camaro. For me to consider a coin to have a new design they have to change the Reverse AND the Obverse.
That's fine...and to a certain degree I agree with you. But, it's not accurate to say the "penny that has not changed in over a century" when the reverse has had several design changes. Outside of minor design modifications, it is accurate to say the obverse has not changed...but the "penny" certainly has.
Great.....yes.....but one of the contentions of many collectors is that we should have designs that reflect a modern world. I don't necessarily agree with this view, but that's the way it is. Tell me.....would you rather that we return to the days of snail mail and party lines? By the way, if you wanted to order something from the US Mint in those days, you had to send in an order form with your check. Chris
I don't know...in some ways they do. They reflect a more modern way of thinking in the US. I'm not necessarily saying it's a good thing (quite the opposite actually), but they demonstrait and change in the way Americans think IMHO. No longer are we focused on our ideals of Liberty...we instead tend to idolize our past leaders.
I have a good design idea for the half dollar. Half Dollar obverse-Eagle standing on top of the world representing gobalization. Reverse- an aerial drone to represent the might of america's military or a man sitting at a computer to represnt how big brother is always watching you Couldn't think of anything good for a reverse. The obverse design sounds good though
