When should I buy an AGE proof?

I am going to get a 2014 AGE proof. Primary purpose is for the coin itself. Secondary is the metals content. This is why I am getting the proof. No desire to part with it. I do want to get the most bang for my buck. I feel that gold could take some dips in the next quarter.

My question is when to get proofs. I worry about the companies and individuals that buy them....grade them....then return the ones that don't meet the grade.

I am worried if I wait till later that I will get returned AGE proof.

What would be the latest time in the year to get AGE that are from mint and not returned proofs sent back out?

Whether you're talking about gold or silver doesn't matter. If you're buying from the Mint, always buy as early as possible once they are released. The people who have to go on the waiting list are apt to end up with those coins returned by others.

If you want the most bang for your buck, then why do you want the proof? It costs a lot more than the uncirculated coin, and since your secondary concern is metal content, the uncirculated coin makes more sense. It has a much better chance of numismatic appreciation than the proof coin.

Since I have not held the AGE proof and uncirculated I am torn on which way to go. I think I used the ASE as my deciding factor plus some youtube videos. The AGE proof looks like you can see all the detail. With the ASE I am 100% a fan of the proof and not a fan of the uncirculated. The uncirculated looks no different than one the ones from the mint tubes. I assume its struck multiple times but I couldn't really tell the difference. I don't want to buy the bullion version because I don't want to pay a lot of money to get a coin in a plastic flip and risk it has scratches.

Does the uncirculated AGE blow you away with it in hand vs the proof?

FWIW, if you put either one in my hand - proof or uncirculated - I'd be blown away. I think they're a gorgeous coin regardless.

    Pardon the interruption...Carry on. :)

I can't answer that. According to the Mint description for the 2013 UNC, it comes in an airtight.

What you might do is check eBay for completed listings on the 2013 PF69UCAM and the MS69 and see what sales prices each has garnered. This will at least give you an idea of the values.

  7. 2014 may be a good year to buy, as mintages may be lower than usual due to interest in gold HOF and potentially gold Kennedy half later this year.

The AGE is just a little bigger than a Half Dollar. Do you think they will make a Kennedy gold coin that is the size of the Half Dollar but a little thicker. I would assume it would be 90% so it wouldn't have to be that much thicker.

  9. I am not even sure the Mint knows what they are going to do with it.

I would rather see a silver proof and reverse proof set. Are they going with gold since its the golden anniversary?

They are going to use them on the White House lawn next year instead of Easter eggs and charge everyone a $25K entrance fee. NOTE: Kids under 12 mos. get in free.

If you are worried about getting a returned coin then buy them early so as to avoid lessen the possibility of returned items.
