To say the least ive finally learned what real tone and fake tone is... i got ahold of a real one and then burnt a nickel and whiped it off and had a fake one and examined them... the real ones color does not fade on the higher parts of the coin such as jeffersons cheak area and forehead area it can be just as colorful as the rest or it can be faded but the fake one is hardly ever darker then the rest of the coin because it gets rubbed off... another thing.. real ones done rub off and fake ones do... i went from a nice golden colored nickel that i burnt to the original color by whipping it hard with a rag... another observation i noted was that the real seemed to be spread evenly while the fake was more eratic most likely do to the fire burning harder in one area then the other... so because of this I tried using chemicals to change the apperience of the nickel and see if it stayed even... It did not... the reason being simple... the smallest whipe takes away the surface chemical.. the chemical is only on the surface same as the burn... the real is caused by the reaction between the actuall metal and the surrounding elements... whether it be cold, heat, wind, rain, or any other substance such as maybe even uv rays changing the appearance... so in conclusion... ive basically just reitterated what most of you told me yesterday atleast now i should beable to tell the difference between a fake tone and a real... I will be studing more on it.. but hey.. i figured we needed to talk about something.... soooo... LETS TALK Mach
Unfornately there are many ways to artificially tone coins. While some are easier to tell than others, toning by nature can be as random as anything. Since so many contributing factors are involved in natural toning, it cannot be labeled as simply as you make it sound. There are quite a few numismatists that devote all of their efforts into the toning research. New ideas and lessons are learned every day. Keep up the studies!
Searching for knowledge about any facet of this hobby is the best thing any of us can do as there is just soooooo much to learn. But a word of warning regarding toning - there are those out there who can tone a coin in such a way that even the most advanced expert cannot tell that the toning is artificial. And anyone that tells you different - is wrong. It is an indication that the person does not know as much as they think they do. Just keep that it mind.
Heheh yes I realize this now and will be kept on my toes.. but most likely i will not be buying any kind of toned coin most likely the toning will just happen by accident as i keep them for years and years... I do realize what i said seems a little to distant but I am always learning.. those above is just what i observed.. im sure theres a million different ways to change a coins color.. I SHALL KEEP MY STUDYS UP .... heheheh thanks all Mach
