I recently bought a PCGS graded 1939 D Jefferson nickel with a "+" grade. If I ever want to sell it, how would I list the population number of it correctly? Do I list only the population of coins with + grades, or do I list all with the same grade whether + or not? The one I bought has a population of 1, with only one "+" graded higher. Would I list it as 1/1? Or do I list the number of coins graded higher as all coins graded one numeral higher even if it's not a + grade? Make sense? Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I don't know if there is a "100% right" way to do it...but here is what I think. Lets use the 1939-D (Rev 38) Jefferson Nickel. Population: MS66: 542 MS66+: 1 MS67: 50 MS67+: 1 The way I look at it...having a "+" does not put the coin in a different group, it's not like FS. If your coin for instance is MS66+, there are 50 graded coins at MS67. If you said your coin (at MS66+) was 1/1...I would think you meant only 1 coin graded higher than MS66+. So, IMHO...I don't think listing this particular coin as 1/1 is accurate. You could say there are only 51 coins graded higher than MS66+.
PCGS and NGC both list the plus grades separately within the given group just like they do with any other designation.
It depends on how technical you want to get. There are - graded lower, graded the same, graded plus, and graded higher. So you could have x/x/x/x - and that's just with coins with no other designations. Depending on the coin of course, and the TPG, you could throw in 2 or more Xes as well.
At least when it comes to PCGS, I don't think this is accurate. The groups that PCGS breaks Jefferson nickels into is non-FS and FS, that's it. Look how the population report is laid out...both the numerical grades and the "+" grades are in the same section. This is because the "+" is part of the numerical grade itself.
Using the above example, my thought, for truth in advertising, would be to list it as MS66+ 1/51. One at this grade (MS66+) with 51 graded higher.
My point was Richie that the plus grades are separate from the straight grades as your illustration plainly shows they are.
OK, fair enough then. I thought you meant they should be listed separately like coins with designations (FS, FH, PL, ect) are. I just mis-read your post. I think we are on the same page.
If it is a 66+, I would list the following: MS66: xxx MS66+: xxx Graded higher: xxx I would just be clear and list how many are in the lower grade and how many higher.
The more (truthful) info you can give will bring you more buyers/bidders and will make you look a lot better as a seller.
This is how PCGS handles the issue in the "My Inventory" section in my Set Registry. The last two columns are Pop and Pop Higher. Sorry I couldn't figure a way to isolate these two items from the rest the coins, which would have shown the column headings. It appears the "+" grades are lumped with the regular grades.
NGS doesn't accumulate within the grade for either a "+" or "*" designation. But to list a coin as a 1/1 simply because their is only one "+" grade given, doesn't tell the whole story. I think we're all on the same page, it's just a matter of how to best convey the information on the listing.
