Hi Folks Have a question concerning a 1872 Canadian fifty cent coin. I've had this coin for a couple years. I have someone who wishes to purchase the coin. When taking photo's to send to the buyer I noticed some things around the word cents and the 5 in the 50. Just curious if that was caused by a worn die. I am not familiar with Canadian coins. And am just checking before I sell it. Sorry if in the wrong forum was unsure as to where to post it. Thanks for any info or opinions.
Based on what my Charlton book says, many coins were struck with refurbished (worn) dies during this time period. There are a few varieties and die pairs to check out, most notably the "Bar" - in this variety, the V of VICTORIA has a bar in the center (basically an upside-down A.) This particular one will increase the value of your coin by a multiple of about 5. There are also varieties with repunched N and A in CANADA, A in REGINA, and 2 of the date. None listed for 50 CENTS, though.
Thanks for the reply. As to the varieties you stated I checked and none are showing on this coin. Just wanted to make sure as I know it will decrease the value as to what the buyer offered.
Fantastic coin ... man, I'd keep that baby!! (but I guess if the price is right, eh?) => would it be possible for you to take close-ups of the following: the last "A" in CANADA the "V" in VICTORIA (as stated above, an upside-down "A" would be nice) the "2" in 1872 ... those close-ups will allow your readers to narrow-down whether you have a real winner, or merely just a kinda winner (again, it is a fantastic looking coin, regardless of whether it is a fancy type ... congrats) Curious, what grade are you claiming? VF20 = $300-$400 ($2,000 for the upside-down "A") EF40 = $675-$800 ($5,000 for the upside-down "A") AU50 = $1,200-$1,500 ($10,000 for the upside-down "A") ... those are book-values from the 2013 Charlton Catalogue Good luck, my friend
I will post close ups later today on the area's you requested. Not a good grader so I was letting the buyer decide on that. The offer price was 100.00 but my gut feeling is the price may come down a little. Nothing has been agreed upon and I may just hang on to it after taking close ups and noticing some things going on with the coin. Thanks for your info

Well, you may not have any of the catalogue listed varieties, but you definitely have a sweet ol' 50 Cent Piece (congrats) ... I personally think that your coin is most likely at least a VF20 (making it worth $300-$400) ... => hey, maybe a few other observers have opinions on this coin's condition and its worth?
