1798 rev of 96 large cent I know the coin is corroded & appears to have been cleaned but I am trying to get a consensus of the net grade. Your opinions would be appreciated. This is a 1798 reverse of 1796 Large cent 1st hair style. S-155 I will be sening it to NCS soon & I have my own opinion but would like to hear others. Thanks- BTW - those are not my pictures
I usually tend to grade these more like the EAC does than the TPG's do - not intenionally mind you, that's just how I grade by following the ANA standards. Anyway, let's forget the corrosion for a second. On that basis I'd say the coin has VF details. But when you take the corrosion into consideration, I'd have to guess it would net VG, maybe even G. I'd wait and see what Leadfoot has to say.
It looks like it has nice VF 30 details but, as stated, will net lower with the environmental damage.
I would grade the coin VF details, severe corrosion, net G. I don't think NCS will touch this coin with a 10 foot pole. Even an experienced EAC "doctor" would have trouble with a coin this corroded. My suggestion -- leave it as-is. Respectfully submitted as MHO...Mike
A very nice coin. Budgood, that is actually quite a very nice coin,as all the lettering is very clear.I don't think it is as corroded as you think.Have you examined this coin under a linentester magnifying glass? You will be pleasantly surprised with what you see under one of those. Aidan.
Thanks Aidan - I thought it was allright enough for me. I compared with all the others from Heritage & it seems on par with the others that have sold. I also have seen more crap come thru NCS that were worse off than this , so I think I will be just fine. I do agree with the consensus that the coin is VF 25 or so & I also agree with you that it has nice detail thru the corrosion. But hell , I have been & could be wrong
Budgood, whatever you do,NEVER offload this coin! It will be a very nice item to pass down through the line. Aidan.
