Need help with coin capsules

I have answered a few ads in the paper by a company called American Historic Society.
Some Walking Libertys came with their album.
It is a very nice deluxe album even though it skips the year 1938 altogether.
Anyway they sent a free album with some Walking Liberty halfs. The trouble is I can't find the correct capsule to fit the album. I called them but they have no clue and don't want to sell any capsules. You have to buy the Walkers from them at a million dollars each to get a capsule that fits.
There is one just like it on ebay right now item# 330054041079
The seller says the 16 coins are ones he picked up over the years and that's all he can tell me.
I believe this is hogwash because you have to buy the coins from AHS to get the correct capsule.
I tried an airtite with black ring and an airtite without the ring. Neither one fits.
So does anyone have this album and where did you buy the capsules?
    Thanks, Vic
PS also need the correct capsules for their ASE album.

First, this is an unusual album
Second: consider buying a Dansco or a Whitman album. They are better and would house the coins without the additional cost of the capsules.

Yes it sure is a weird bird. Fact is it is very nice and I got it free.
Just for your information, I have a brand new Dansco filled from 1937 to the end (except 1938D).
I also have a Whitman folder too with ten coins.
But here's the catch... I would love to fill this Mongrel AHS album too.

Are empty US Mint Silver Dollar capsules available?

I received my San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative $1 coins recently and the capsule was in the case so tightly that when I finally got it free, it went flying across the room. It sustained a small chip on one edge. See first image. It's not a big deal, and in fact you can't see it from the reverse side of the capsule, which, arguably is the more attractive side of the coin. However, I could fix this with a new capsule. Does anyone know where I can get one?

Some people who have their commemoratives graded sell the empty packages on ebay, but I don't want the whole thing; just the capsule. Does anyone sell these? Alternatively, does anyone out there who has their coins graded have an extra capsule they are not using? I think a capsule from any silver dollar or silver eagle would be the right size.

    Thanks.

Just a couple of things. First, I sold the AHS albums and no longer need to find the capsules I started this thread for. As it turns out, the only ones that fit that album have to be bought from American Historic Society and they have to be bought with a coin inside. What a giant ripoff. I found that an airtite is just a tad smaller than the opening in the album. I thought of using a small dot of superglue on the backside of the capsule to hold the smaller Airtite in the openings. You would never see it because this album only shows the obverses. You could still pry the front half of the capsule open if needed even when the back half is glued in. Anyway after much fiddling and numerous perplexing phone calls to American Historic Society, I have sold out and I'm done with it. What a wild goose chase. So just a warning to anyone not to buy coins from AHS.

Second, I was told by two different dealers that the mint has their own size capsules. That means an Airtite or Kointain type capsule won't fit the mint box. I do not know if this is true and never checked it out.
So dreamer, you may have to find a used one from someone who has sent the granite lady coin out.
It is funny that there are so many sizes of capsules. You'd think that they would make them all the same.

Am I correct that the US Mint capsules are the same for all recent silver dollars and silver eagles?

Also, do you know whether anyone has ever been able to buy empty replacement capsules from the US Mint?

Thats strange that they would leave out an entire year just because the 38-D is a bit expensive.

    Yes I thought that too. I picked up a 38D on ebay for $83.00. But just to recap the AHS company;
they charge $50 a coin for medium grade whizzed and cleaned common date Walkers.
So for a F or VF 38D they would have to get hundreds.

Do you have a source of the dimensions of the San Francisco Old Mint dollar and the American Silver Eagle? According to Wikipedia the ASE is 40.6 mm in diameter. According to listings in ebay, the SFOM dollar is "1.5 inches" which by my calculation is 40.5 mm (essentially the same).

This information might be somewhere on the US Mint web site, but if so, they've done a great job of hiding it.

They're not the same, check any conversion chart. The commemorative dollars are specified at 1.5 inches plus or minus 0.003 inches. That's 38.1 millimeters. The ASE is 40 millimeters. May not seem like much, but it's enough that you can't put an ASE in a dollar holder. You can put a dollar in an ASE holder, but the coin will rattle around inside it.

As for a source, it's right there on the mint's web page.

I did find the dimensions of the ASE under "Coins and Medals" --> American Eagles --> View Brochure. No such luck with the SF Commemorative.

I did find a link to the original legislation http://www.theorator.com/bills109/s1881.html
that specifies the diameter of the SF Commemorative dollar in inches (1.5) which, as you point out is 38.1 mm.

Is there a place on the mint web site that lists the dimensions of all the coins? I couldn't find it. I know the COA's that come with the coins have that information, but I couldn't find those on the mint web site either.

The mint doesn't have a link for commems and such but they have this for regular coins - Coin Specs

Unfortunately this one was my fault. I was pulling the coin out of the case and it was in there so tightly that when it came loose, it went flying across the room and landed on a tile floor. I know now to do that over a soft surface.

The good news (amazing, really) is that I found someone on ebay who apparently does a lot of encapsulating and grading and he sent me 2 replacement capsules free of charge.

i like to buy a plastic display case which can hold several of the u.s.mint coins with capsule on it. so you don't have to open the capsule and take out the coin and transfer it to the display case. do they produce this one?. anyone?.

no. not airtitie holders. i mean like american eagle coin with original mint capsule on it. and i want to transfer that coin with original mint capsule to a plastic case that can hold several coins. instead of open the mint capsule and insert it to a plastic case. i want the whole coin and capsule place inside the plastic case. so that no foreign or dirt nor air can transmit to that coin.

That's why I was showing you the case - the mint's holders are close enough to being the same size as the Air-Tite holders that you could use the square black case and put the mint's holder in it.
