What do you think this silver war nickel would grade?

Thanks! I'm going to be using it as my example of one for my 20th century coins display case :)

The 42-S usually comes with a mushy strike -- not a lot of full-steps designated (percentage wise). Other dates, like the 43-D are known for their hammered full strikes. Here is a link to a complete set of War Nickels that belongs to one of the members here (Lehigh96). He has a lot of great information in his set details for each coin about % FS, and other information. I use it as a resource quite a lot.

Really, all of them are top-notch, but that 42-S Lehigh has on there is absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, I agree. the 42-S coins simply don't come that nice (almost ever). His entire set (even outside of the War years) is just amazing. He's my "go to guy" for Jefferson research and information. I visit his sets often.

Based on the photos, I wouldn't go higher than MS65 for the grade of this coin. As others have pointed out, war nickels are not worth submitting for grading unless they have a legitimate shot at MS67. Leave this one raw and enjoy it as an album coin.

Funny thing about my 42-S in my registry set. At one point I replaced my toned stunner with an MS67 5FS example in order to reach the number one spot in the registry. Once Mark Bressler obtained his 6th MS68 war nickel, I conceded and sold my full step example for a very nice profit.

Coincidentally, the photograph of the reverse of that coin was the one that made the cover of Roger Burdette's book about WWII Patterns.

TJ, I would say only if one of your Nickels is really superior to the others and has a chance to get an FS designation then send it in.

You may want to look at some of the Jeff's our fellow member gbroke posts from time to time, there's only one word to describe them: ENVY

It's a nice coin but not worth spending the money to get it slabbed.
