What do you think this silver war nickel would grade and is it worth sending it in to grade? war nickel obverse.jpg war nickel reverse.jpg

Nice nickel for sure, but not worth sending in. It has decent fields and I can't tell for sure from the pics but it probably has nice luster in hand. But, the strike isn't that great, it has really mushy steps, and there are a couple marks on both the obverse (the line under Jeffy's chin) and reverse (few spots that aren't damage but distracting in my opinion). And the rim on the top of the obverse seems mushy. I think you'd probably get a 64-65 but you'd probably need a higher grade to make it worthwhile.

Not a bad coin to question though...I think the obverse is especially nice you'd have a 66 in my opinion if it wasn't for the line and other marks.

But more opinions are always nice. You really seem to know what you are talking about when it comes to grading though :)

Eh, I'm OK I guess. It really is small details that you have to look at. I love Jeffersons and I do have a lot of experience with them, but there are some others on this forum with a lot more than me. You just have to take a few extra seconds and see what pops out at you. And don't get too excited about getting things graded - that can wait.

Do you see the things I mentioned though? Don't feel like I was trying to belittle the coin at all...it is nice. As I said it is tiny details that can make the difference between a $20 coin and a $400 coin. And the more you practice and the more you scrutinize things, the better off you'll be. Patience is the key...I have made some mistakes along the way but I have learned from them.

Ya, I am just seeing high grade coins sitting in my collection and it would be nice to get the official graded packaging, also to protect it well. I have hundreds of coins but only 2 graded so I am kind of trying to find the better ones and will be posting on here asking like I did with this one ;)

I do see the things you mentioned and I don't feel like you were trying to do that at all, I really appreciate getting advice with things like that

I agree It's the Rev. side that seem light struck, stairs, hell the whole building, some in Jeffs. hair also.

Looking closely it does look that way, thank you for the help :) I just picked this up today for extremely cheap because it being a high grade caught my eye for how cheap it was

Yep. For most war nickels it isn't worth getting them graded unless it has a good chance for 67 or full steps. So you are really looking for exceptional pieces here.

Here are a couple good references for you:

    http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/

PCGS Photograde has examples of each series for each grade. There are nuances throughout each series, for example, certain years of each type of coin may either be more well-struck than others, or more difficult to find in certain grades than others. But it is a great tool to use to look for the subtle differences in detail that I mentioned.

An online price guide. I wouldn't use this as a guide for buying or selling coins at all (you're better off looking at ebay or other auction sites to see what recent coins have fetched in terms of dollars). What this is valuable for in my opinion is looking to see trends in general or looking to see what coins it might make sense to try to grade. For example, I mentioned that it doesn't make sense to get war nickels graded in general unless the have a good shot for 67 or full steps. You can see that here,

I wouldn't have this one graded, but it's a lovely coin for an album.
