This wheat penny I found today in a roll that I got from the bank is not right. I want to know if its real and any idea how much its worth.
Welcome to the forum Cashlin ! Yes, someone ground the back flat and also the front rim. Why ? Only the person doing it knows. When most engraving was done by hand, beginners would practice on something like these as they were the shape and size of many pendants. In the late 1800s and the early 1900s, many did this to silver coins and engraved love words and names on the reverse. These are called "love tokens" and are quite collectable. Ones like yours we say are Post mint damage ( PMD) as it couldn't have occurred at the time of striking. Jim
