I think I did in another thread a long time ago. Curiously it was dug up on the 4th of July 2012 by a volunteer and member of the congregation of that church. It was probably there for close to 150 years, aside from corrosion it has very light wear.
I would love to start a small collection of CWTs...I just feel like it is quite daunting to do the research and I have so much on my plate right now I couldn't dedicate the time. Perhaps someday.
Actually they do, next time I see one I'll try and get a picture its like speed limit 23 1/2 mph (school zone)
Could be it's from Tonopah, Nevada. I don't know anything about it but I know that tokens from this area are highly collectible and some of them are very pricey. Personally, I've never seen one like yours and that's probably a good thing. It's likely a rare one.
Nevada is one of those hot locations for merchant tokens from the 19th century. Alaska is another, much to my chagrin. When I was a teenager I bought up a bunch of Juneau and Anchorage 12 1/2 cent tokens out of a dealers' junk box. Sold them probably 15 years ago and thought I made a windfall. Then I saw what they were selling for in published auctions and realized I made a major mistake selling them on eBay. I had no idea. I still have some tokens from Black Diamond, California and some other now non-existent towns and I won't sell them.
Put it on the burner for later. I imagine what with your new practice, wife and little one on the way you have a lot going on. I had some interests like that when I was in my twenties and only acted on them a few years ago - ie 17th century English tokens etc. The CWT for me are very specific, I only collect a very very few. I would like to get a nice red BU "Our Little Monitor" tokens sometime and then I am done with CWT.
Your best bet with that token may be to consign it with holabird-kagin. They have the most experience with Nevada/ghost town tokens and are sure to get you top dollar. With that said, it'll have to be cleaned up a bit before you send it off so you may have to spend a couple of hundred dollars first. http://holabirdamericana.com/
Another idea is Steve Hayden, he specializes in 19th century exonumia and has his own website with regular auctions. http://www.civilwartokens.com/
I sent a email to http://holabirdamericana.com with pics, will keep everyone informed on what happens. Thx everyone for all ur help.
I have a good collection of tokens and especially in CWTs. That is definitely not a CWT but a nice find.
Well talked to fred at http://holabirdamericana.com he said its a rare token and he has sold one before that went for $750! So thats awsome! Now the question is do I sell it or hold onto it for awhile. He said he would expect at auction for it to sell anywhere from 750-1000 easy and up to $2000. Wow
Found token on Holabird- Kagin aution site " R. siri & co./12 1/2 c/ drink or cigar // Palisade/ Nevada" Had value of $2,200.00, I don't know the date of the posting or if the value was an asking or sale. goldbill
