Hi All, New to the forums here. Just wanted to get some general advice. I've got about 12 P & D US Mint Rolls from over the last few years of the Sacagawea Golden Dollar. I know that most people here are collecting older coins, but I'm still a novice and I'm attracted to shiny stuff. I'm wondering what the best way to store these rolls is? Something like this maybe: http://www.air-tites.com/coin_tube_storage_boxes.htm Or is it best to break open the rolls, and put each coin in an Air-Tite or Intercept Shield. I want to get the most value out of each coin. I saw some of the values for MS 65-68's of these coins, and they can be quite high. Would it be worth it to slab the best looking couple coins out of each roll, or are they best left untouched? I'm looking for the best way to preserve the coins & their values for years to come, not looking to sell anytime soon. Thanks in advance- Nick
I am collecting the Statehood quarter mint rolls but I get them sealed in the box. The value seems to be about 20% higher this way. I don't know much about the Sacs but I think it all depends on why you have them, is this purely an investment? If so then you need to determine if the value of the unopened roll outways the value of the individual coins. If you just really like the coins then break those suckers out and enjoy them.
Howdy nb - Welcome to the Forum !! It's a tough call to make. If stored in a cool dry environment the rolls should be fine. But you ask about slabbing the coins - rather obviously this means you have to open them. If you do, then I recommend Air-Tite holders for each coin. And they must be properly stored as well because Sackys are notorious for developing spots. As for the grading bit, if you are quite good at it then you can pick out the best. But I would not submit anything less than a 67 or 68 if it were me. It's just not worth the cost. And be ready for the TPGs to disagree with your grading - you are liable to get several disappointments.
This is just what i would do if I collected those rolls. I would break them open and try to grade them, keep the very best and spend the rest on other coins. The very best i would send off to be graded, and hope for MS68 or MS69.
