Thanks for the advice. I live near Seattle. Is it better to go to a coin show than to an established dealer? As I write this I note a link to the left on this page for "The Coin Show" radio. Is this the Coin Show that you are referring to? What is The Coin Show? Is it like Antique Road Show but just for coins? sorry to bother you for more information, but how does one go about getting coin insurance?
well I would take it to a coin show to have several people/dealers look at it. If the coin show is big enough sometimes they have people that represent PCGS or NGC third party graders that can either look at your Pattern coin or they can submit it for you to get slabbed/graded. the coin show radio to the right side of your computer screen is just that a radio show that talks about coins. If you are going to send the coin by registered mail I would add insurance at the post office to cover the loss of your coin should it got lost in the mail. An established dealer is good, but I would rather have many dealers at a coin show look at it. Some dealers might not know what it is and some other dealers might know exactly what it is. I am gonna find out if there is a big coin show in your city Seattle. BRB.
Thanks, again, Spirityoda. I see that there is a very large show in the beginning of May in the Seattle area. I will take your suggestion and attend so that I can get several dealers take on the coin. The dealer who already viewed it seemed pretty knowledgable about california coinage. But, I am asking a fairly specialized question about value... or, possibly, about identification... so I should get many eyes on it. In the meantime, I'm going to investigate insuring the whole collection. Even if my coin is not one of the Gosset coins, it certainly has value as a proof of those coins. Plus, the collection contains proofs of other valuable coins (these I'm pretty positive are proofs since they are blank on one side). Good suggestion.
Spirityoda, I finally got to the library to check out the Standard Catalog of World Coins. My measurment of the 20 dollar picture was 43-44mm. Can I bother you to measure your picture again? Maybe you and I are looking at different entries in the Catalog. Thanks!
no problem 33-34mm. trust me I did measure it again. buy a ruler and check it yourself. you might need it to check other coins in the future.
there is only one entry for British Columbia in my catalog... so I know it's the correct spot for your pattern 20 dollar gold piece.
