Once again, dealers were paying each person up to $500 to wait in line for 3 hours to buy the full set of baseball commems at the show. But I was sitting at the PCGS table and saw one of those dealers come over with about 250 of them. As the PCGS employee worked with him, they put the coins into flips and literally shoved them as tightly as they could into plastic PCGS boxes. I mean, they were literally shoving them, forcing them down to get them to fit in the box. I wonder if the flips were really enough protection from that kind of violence? I thought to myself, "Well, now they're all down to MS69's for sure!"
Yeah, I considered it, but I thought I could make more money doing deals. If my wife had been there, though... she would have gladly stood in line with a good book and made $500.
In another thread, not too long ago, someone complained about backorders at the Mint on the very first day. This is why! It's too bad that someone didn't make a list of all the dealers who don't care what rules they "BEND" at the expense of other collectors. It would be nice to post the list all over the web. Chris
Since when is it bending the rules to offer to buy coins from collectors that have them? Or is it offering to buy them from the collectors at a price higher than they paid?
If the Mint was limiting the number of coins purchased by each person, then they were skirting the rules paying people to buy the coins specifically for those dealers. They did a similar thing with the anniversary SAE's, the gold Buff's, etc. by having employees buy the coins for them and prices skyrocketed for other collectors. I guess some people don't see anything wrong with this...........Do unto others before they do unto you! Chris
I missed out on the opportunity to purchase some of the HOF varieties while at Baltimore. Ended up getting one Silver proof dollar and a clad half dollar. Sufficient for my needs, but then I wasn't looking to flip for profit.
The dealer probably knows beforehand that he'll get a certain percentage of 70's and 69's no matter what.
So now we are going to decide who is allowed to buy coins from the mint? And what they are allowed to do with them? It's called capitalism.
Being an ancient collector I find this whole thing hilarious. I would have gladly made $500, for a YN that's some real $$$.
