Yup, I got a hold of a Bahama's coin, it is dated I believe somewheres around 1901 - 1945 I know its real, it has a star fish on the back im thinking a starfish in a fishermans net? I think so I dont have it on hand right now, I think its a 1 cent piece. Anyone know of anything like it?
The only Bahamas coins I have came from pocket change when I visited there on a Caribbean cruise a few years ago. Is the date worn off of yours? The one you pictured is KM#59, with a combined mintage of about 38-million in brass from 1974-85, or KM#59a, with an additional 24-million+ in zinc from 1985-??. (2001 is the last year listed in Krause.) Values range from face value to a few dollars depending on date, grade and variety. BTW it's the low value of the coin, not the fact that it has what appears to be a correct design, that gives me some assurance that you have a genuine example. The starfish reverse (which has no sign of a net) was first used in 1966 with a Queen Elizabeth II obverse (KM#2, KM#15 and KM#16).
I just found that from a website. Not actual one pictured. I cannot access my coins right now, the coin I have has a face on the reverse side. Nope the date is fine its in mint condition. Face and starfish on each sides.
Well, what is the date? No coins were minted with the starfish reverse until 1966. The information I posted above assumed that your initial post was correct in describing the coin. Based on your later comment, you have either KM#2, mintage 12-million+ from 1966-69 in nickel-brass; KM#15, 125,000 one-year bronze mintage in 1970; or KM#16, 10-million+ brass mintage from 1971-73. Values run from face value to $2.50. Without either photos or an accurate description, it is pretty hard to identify a coin. BTW on British Commonwealth coins the Queen's effigy is always the obverse, and on coins from other nations effigys are almost always the obverse design. Just remember - heads=obverse (front) and tails=reverse (back).
Roy,since 1974,the Coat-of-Arms has appeared on the obverse of the Bahamian coins. The Bahamas is the only place in the entire British Commonwealth (& the world!) to have issued a 15c. coin (1966-92). Aidan.
Can this thread be transferred to the 'Ancient & World Coins' section,as this is not a U.S. coin? Aidan.
