I'm obviously new to the forum and apologize if not posting in the proper portion of the forum. My nephew found this on my parent's land and my mom's just been keeping it in her purse. She doesn't know how to post pics online so I told her I'd research it for her to see what she has. I'm a watch collector myself, so while I don't know what I'm looking at on coins, I do know real gold when I see/feel it, and I think she's got something of value here. Any info or advice I can get from you members would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That's the same thing we were thinking... Unfortunately that's about as far as I can get in my limited research. It seems most with these types of crosses from that era are silver, so the gold is throwing me off even more. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes, the cross looks Spanish. But give us some specs here: size (I'd guess maybe 30 mm), weight? Anyway, if it is gold and that size, then it is definitely valuable.
It's heavy for its size, and next time the coin's in my possession I'll post get accurate measurements and post. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Where are you located? That may help narrow down what influences were in your area. I'd have a tough time thinking it was Spanish if you were in say, Minnesota.
If this was in the ground salt water or a fire some of detail could be damaged . You need to find an expert !!! This area looks like a damaged Gates of Hercules to me. I am not a expert .
Anything is possible. Just given the location of the land which had never previously been built on, and the randomness of the find with a metal detector, it's an all-around a head scratcher. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ditto Just something too strange for me. But, that could be because it is VERY rare! Or just a poor copy.
Again, I appreciate the input. I will report back as soon as I can with dimensions and weight. If nothing else, it's piqued my interest in coins as something I'd like to possibly start collecting. Thanks all Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Most think copy ? Should recall metal detector can find real gold metals . Don't let item go for melt if gold was struck . Little knowledge could identify something very old.
