I went thru $50 in nickels last night. The bag of MWRs had obviously been dropped by the armored car service or the bank because about 1/3 of the rolls were broken open. This made more work for me as I went through them because I had to "count to 40" numerous times, but given I found this 2009-S proof, as well as a 1938-D and 1955-D in far better than average condition (in my opinion), I am very happy :) IMG_5492_sm.jpg

Just looked through three customer-wrapped rolls from a TD Bank here in Manhattan. The teller knows me by now and sets aside any customer-wrapped rolls (although there haven't been very many lately of any denomination).

Out of two rolls of Kennedy Halves and one roll of small-size dollars, I found a couple of decent AU clads, a 1972 P and D. The roll of dollars wasn't a total waste as I got my second AU Chester A. Arthur dollar (the first came from a MetroCard vending machine). How did those end up in circulation so quickly?

I'm trying to put together a complete circulated set of clad Kennedys and Presidential Dollars up to the Chester A. Arthur dollar, but if more keep popping up in my change, maybe I'll be able to complete the set!

I find this particular niche of coin collecting, roll hunting, to be particularly rewarding. It's like a lottery ticket without the guilt as I can always spend the coins I don't need over time, or dump them in the counting bin back at T.D. Bank. Generally I gravitate more towards slabbed, higher value coins, but putting together a complete circulated set of coins you simply found in rolls or in your pocket somehow just feels more satisfying to me.

    4 boxes of nickels:
    2 Bufs(Dateless, 36D), 1 War(43S). Nickels have been sucking bad lateley

    2 boxes of dimes:
Really rough dateless Merc, 53d Roosie.

That brings my total dimes found this year to 50. That was my entire goal for the year :) I still have 8 mos to go! Maybe I can get another full roll.

    $75 CWR Dimes: Skunk

    $50 CWR Nickels: 40 (x2), 41, 42, 47-D, 49, 52-D, 54, 54-S, 55-D, 56-D, 57-D (x3), 58-D, 59, 59-D (x3) and 1 war nickel, 43-P.

Two interesting things from today's search - the last four rolls I picked up from the credit union were all original sealed rolls from the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City. No silver from those rolls, but the latest dated coin in any of them was '81. Maybe someone brought them home as a souvenir 30 years ago. My teller mentioned something about having a sealed roll of cents marked "Playboy Casino", but one of the other tellers snapped them up as soon as they came in.

She made it up to me by handing over a nice shiny '53 Roosie. :D

So the bank gave me 9 boxes of cents this week. They have to order at least 2 boxes so I'm guessing they ordered my 8, needed a box for themselves so they ordered 2, and gave me the extra. I'm not complaining :)

    This weeks boxes gave me:
    - 97 wheats - oldest was a 191_ pretty worn. The oldest readable date was 1920. There were quite a few 20's and 30's this week.
    - 1983 CUD
    - 1983 Struck Through Late Stage Die Cap
    - 1998 WAM, my 28th
    - 2000 WAM, my 40th

    On to next week! :)

another weekend coin dump from the same customer, and another in-progress silver jackpot! my preliminary total from this haul does not include the full amounts of cents, nickels, and dimes, as those bags still are stuck in the coin counter, but i managed to sort off a bunch before the machine ate it. i'll get to those coin bags later this week when the machine ejects them. anyways, on to the important bits!

    1*1964 kennedy half
    10*65-69 kennedy halves
    3*standing liberty quarters
    4* silver washingtons
    40*silver roosies
    18*war nickels
    34*buffalo nickels (22 no date, one 1920D)
and several wheat cents i have yet to sift through.

i also grabbed a nickel out of there that looked to be a clipped planchet. i have to check it out a bit more.

also, i know the teller that accepted the transaction kept about a dozen ike dollars, an 1838 half dime (still waiting to find out mint mark) and several walking liberty halves for himself. hopefully i have some more goodies to post about tomorrow!

updated totals for the list in the post above:

    1*1964 kennedy half
    11*65-69 kennedy halves
    3*standing liberty quarters
    5* silver washingtons
    41*silver roosies
    33*war nickels
    63*buffalo nickels

i bought the bag of nickels when it came off the counter this afternoon, and the wife and i have sorted it (hence the much higher nickel totals). should have dimes to sort after tomorrow. i have also collected a couple hundred wheat cents so far, but there's still a bunch more in the bag for more entertainment later this week.

    $50 worth of nickels.
    1938 D, 1942 P silver, and a first for me: a painted 2005 buffalo. Also got a lot of mint marked 40's and 50's, and a Bermuda quarter in a quarter roll.[IMG]

I filled up my MetroCard today at a vending machine, purposely using cash to get dollar coins in change. My question is, how did this BU 2006 Sacagawea not only end up in circulation, but still BU after 8 years, and above all, dispensed from a machine? I don't think many people are inserting dollar coins to pay. Rather, they get change in dollar coins and make a disgusted sigh when they come clinking out into the tray.

I've also found two Chester A. Arthur dollars, also not intended for general circulation, from the same machines. Still waiting for a State Quarter/Sacagawea mule, but I'm probably going to be waiting for that until they find Jimmy Hoffa.

And no, the machine didn't dispense it in a PVC-free flip for me. ;)

If you don't mind my asking, what is the significance of your finds? All I see are four circulated nickels from 1971???

Sorry...those aren't 1971 "no S" nickels. Those are Philadelphia nickels. Worth face value.
