Again, not nearly as nice as your sweet new OP coin, but my coin seems quite similar to your winner!! Tacitus AE Tetradrachm Egypt, Alexandria Date: 275-276 AD Diameter: 20.9 mm Weight: 9.0 grams Obverse: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Tacitus Reverse: Elpis holding flower and raising skirt Reference: Emmett 3975
Here's another Tyche standing reverse, from a Hadrian year 2, also from the Stack's mixed lot. Big difference in style! EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian year 2, 117/8 AD billion tetradrachm, 24 mm, 13.5 gm Obv: AVTKAICTPAINOC AΔPIANOC; laureate bust right Rev: Tyche standing left with rudder and cornucopia; L-B Ref: Emmett 901(2), R4 The Hadrian and Claudius II Tyche reverses side-by-side:
While I agree that reverse is great, I like the the obverse portrait which is not at all bad compared to the Claudius II coins I have seen. I wish someone had stuck me with a loser lot like the one you have been forced to endure. It has all the appearances of a collection individually selected by a nobody whose coins were not special enough for Stacks to worry about. That sounds like most of us. My collection of not-ready-for-the-big-dealers stuff takes more than one box but I hope someday someone gets as much enjoyment out of it as you have this one.
Awesome coin TIF! I must admit I lost interest in my late Alexandrian tets. Mainly because mine were not the best quality. This one rocks though. If I ever pursue some of these again it is definitely going to have nice legends!
"SPA 6. Expanded obverse inscriptions. From a historical perspective this is one of the most interesting things, it provides expanded (if necessary) obverse legends in Greek, and English translations. " Check... Very cool TIF, I always find it amusing that tetradrachms are my main focus of interest, yet you acquire them at a much quicker pace. Not to mention scoring an R4 from a group lot. "TIF you might want to take a walk now. You know, get out of my turf. Now."
x = vlaha's age 3x= TIF's age y = # of vlaha tets 3y = # of TIF tets Looks about right to me, junior. (and make that "scoring two R4s from a group lot" )
Ah yes I'd forgotten about that other rarity. I believe there was some discussion about there being "x known", but that was in year 19xx so it might be fun to do an update to the census. Then Doug chimed in that it might be better not to disappoint the twenty-or-so owners of an issue that has "x known". Now now TIF, I'm sure even Steve's psychologist agrees that it's not healthy to delude your self about your age... ...only joking people, only joking.
ahahaha => well, my therapist told me that TIF is refreshingly young at heart ... ... oh, and that's "priceless" my cool, young coin-friend!! (I hope that you're as young as TIF when you're her age!!) => "Cheers", to both of you awesome coin-buds!!
Speaking as a 4.8x who just returned from Baltimore with three new tets and a drachm, I thik you may have been barking up the right tree with the math problem. What is y?
Actually, my formula is wrong. I thought vhaha was 17. Looks like he's 15 and he has fewer Alex Tets than I though (3?) So, if that is correct I'm 3.33x and 5y. V may be right about certain things
There are some C II G tets that seem to have been engraved by highly skilled individuals who have put in more effort into creating reverses that have dynamism and detail. This Tyche is head and shoulders above the qulaity of any of my Tyches from Alexandria. My best CIIG tet is as below.:-
