Doug is exactly right there--unless you want to end up with an 1893B--Bejing mint.

Here is a classic 1893s via China

Great thread, lots of really good information.

for the sake of education can you point to the specific attributes on the 1893 S via China that give away that it's fake?

Sure--look at the stars on the obverse--they are crudely detailed. The date is is crude also--look at the "3--" it is out of proportion to the 9. The lettering on the reverse is also crude, and looks more like typography, as opposed to engraving. I can't comment on the metal, as I have never seen the coin in hand, but it looks cast, as if it were part silver and part base metal. The eagle on the reverse is out of proportion--too far in the left field. Detailing on the wings is crude and lacks specific definition--once again pointing to cast and not struck. This one is a poor counterfeit.

Thanks... I kind of figured it might be something obvious that I missed like a misspelling or something like that... it's been a long day :)

Another thought for Morgans is if you love spectacularly toned coins this is the series you gotta watch for at coins but those end of the roll coins can be wonderful unfortunately being end roll coins their often 62-64 is very tough to find a great toner Morgan in 65 or better

Yupp.......I have a few of those. DO NOT buy non-slabbed Morgan toned coins at a premium price, as you have no idea if they are market acceptable. I won't get into the AT/NT debate in this post, but if you want them to have market value, and have a good chance at being legitimately toned, just avoid raw toned Morgans--there are so many "potato" coins, and "shake and bake" out there that it isn't worth the trouble.

Here is one of my end roll toners that is considered "market acceptable" :

If you like toned Morgans be sure to watch the upcoming Stacks auctions starting in late April from what they call The West 57th Street Collection. Some very, very, pretty coins !!

Oh Yeah!! That grouping is some of the prettiest in any collection. I have seen many of those coins.

I tried viewing them on Stacks site last night but did not find them. I did read they are going to be selling them during their weekly iAuctions and as Greg stated, it will start in late April.

I saw that on their e-mail to me as well. There's one in particular that I would like to acquire.

All my toned Morgan's are slabbed for a newbie I'd be very hesatant to buy one that wasn't even if I believed the color is anyone's guess if a tpg would is much easier and safer to buy them already slabbed and you can often buy a great toned coin in ms for not a ton of money many of mine were under $200

I am a long time collector but I always wanted a PL example. I would imagine that it's best to buy those in person right.? Online photos can be deceiving.

Definitely, raw or slabbed and designated PL it's best to look at them first.

If you never risk then you will never profit. I avoid slabbed coins but I also don't buy very expensive coins.

Then do it at your own risk. Your choice--my advice as a Morgan collector for 40+ years. You want to buy potential junk--do it. :)
