cleaning???

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by chapterpennycollector, Mar 27, 2014.

  1. This is more for tokens than coins. I know with coins that cleaning can, and usually does, decrease the value of them.

As far as my tokens go, decreasing the value is something I don't care about because I don't plan on selling any, I am more interested in cleaning the ones that have green rust/mold whatever it is, as well as, just "dirt."

Also, if anyone knows of any chemicals that would help ummm, I don't really know how to explain it, but where the token is worn make the letters more visible and such.

Thanks in advance for any help, it is much appreciated.

Keep in mind that us collectors should consider ourselves as curators of collectibles for future generations. While you may never sell your collection, eventually somebody will and when you ruin a collectible item by improperly caring for it, that is a loss to the collecting world forever. (Think about all the polished silver coins ruined.)

"Green rust" is simple verdigris. Once it reaches the later stage (heavy), it cannot be removed without revealing the permanent damage to the surfaces. Verdigris at this stage is best left alone and halted/stabilized to slow the corrosion process. Removal with strong acids will result in a very undesirable piece. It would be helpful if you could post some pictures so we can see what you're facing.

Any conservation project should always start with the Polarity Ladder:

There is nothing that I am aware of that will do that.
