So I go out to have a bite to eat with my new lady friend tonight and she presents me with three Silver Eagles, gem mirror proof (whatever - these are not terms normally I get to use!) in cases, 1986-S, 1987-S, and 2004-W all in original proof cases (you know the velvet boxes with the eagles on em). They'd been sold for SCRAP silver where she works and she picked up for me at about $8 each. They're pristine MS69 - MS70. If there are marks on them I would need a microscope. I have no idea of the value of Eagles and the guy that took them for scrap scrapped their certificates, but there you go - some great present!
You just got the the deal of the day!!! Congratulations! These coins will go for anywhere from $25.00 to $35.00 and up, a piece. Keep them they are beautiful coins and 99.99% silver, one ounce. They are proof coins, which means they were struck at least twice with polished dies and planchets (blanks).
She got the deal - I got a total gift! I think I'll ask her to look out for other deals like that where she works but I'll offer to pony up some bread for future occasions. She also got me a circulated 1921-D Morgan too. Very nice day I would say.
Your new lady friend scored some serious points!:thumb: What type of business does she work at where they are turning in silver proofs for scrap @ $8 a piece. I need to start that business!!! GL with future acquisitions. Darryl
It's a jewelers. Apparently this one guy is paying for his fiance's engagement ring with scrap silver - but you'd think he'd get more on ebay!
Goodness.. that's got to be the absolute worst way to pay a ring. Not to mention a seemingly slow process (I guess he had more than just the three proofs, but still...)
Even as scrap silver, that jeweler is making a killing off the guy at spot price alone.... Paying $8.00 an ounce with silver sitting at over $13 currently... Awesome gift though. You know, if things don't work out between the two of you....
I'm curious - how much will the lack of the little mint certificate and booklets reduce the value of these coins or is the value inherent?
All I can say is WOW. Some people just are idiots. Turning coins like that for scrap. Now of course she will be watching for more for you. Naturally your going to offer a Lobster dinner in appreciation.
