I have simply lost my breath for how beautiful these ms-65 + wartime nickels are, Deffinatley the most gorgeous coins of all the nickel series, you have that bright white shine and luster of a silver mercury, or a top grade morgan dollar, rolled up into a jefferson nickel, and the cost is still reasonable, a new mission is at hand for me, all ms-65 + wartime nickels are going to be mine . No doubt about that, Penny. I have many examples in the grade range you mentioned. They are definately highlights in my collection. One other aspect that bears mentioning, is original toning. Nothing more eye-catching than light pastel colors on a high-grade, lustorous Silver-Alloy nickel.

Yes, that is absolutely a gorgeous set there, gdjmsp, and make sure your son knows that. I actually only have one silver wartime nickel That is highgrade with major toning, it's hard to find toned coins out where I am, The one I have that is toned, is what I think is called halo toning, a very nice coin indeed, all my other MS Wartime Nickels are white to the max, I do although have lots of regular type jefferson that attribute some major nice toning. By the way, now that i'm on the subject of nickels, anyone notice how prooflike a lot of the 2000 Nickels are? Including the 2001 issues?
sorry for being so noob ive been collecting coins for some time now but I have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to tone... other then it having a tone obviously... lol... but how do they come to have a tone and how would you aquire a toned one.. do you get lucky with pocket change or is only purchasable.... etc.. ive been reading alot of your posts pennycase, jody, and GDJMSP and I have to say you guys have very good taste and very good talent obviously pro's in the coin world. mind throwing down a few subtle hints Mach
Hello, Machiavelli. Welcome aboard. No need to apologize for being a newb. I've got a lot to learn, myself. That's really one of the best things about the hobby. I may not always have the money to buy coins, but I can always afford to learn something new. Toning is really just a nice way of saying "tarnish". I'ts a coloration that developes on certain metals due to a variety of reasons. Coins can tone because of contminants on their surfaces, because of pollutants in the air, because of heat and humidity, or because of processes people subject them to. Toning can be attractive, or just the opposite, it can be ugly. Some people seek out toned coins, and will pay a premium for the ones they find attractive. You can sometimes find toned coins in pocket change. Ever seen a nickel that was dark gray around the lettering and designs, while at the same time, it was more silver colored on the high spots? Well, that's one example of toning. Thanks for the kind words, but I can assure you that I (speaking only for myself) am every bit as much of an amature as you are. Howdy Mach - Welcome ot the Forum !! Thanks for the kind words To answer your question - finding coins with toning that you find appealing is no great trick - you just have to look for them. While almost every coin in existence is toned to one degree or another - it depends on the idividual as to what is appealing. To be sure - you will rarely find toned coins in circulation, other than the ordinary grey. You almost always have to purchase them. And as for knowing which ones to purchase ? Well - when you see a toned coin that makes say - WOW !! Then that's the one you buy
Hey man, yeah, thanks for the compliments and whatnot, but, I haven't been collecting long either, I just spend every waking hour looking at coins . How about this, post a new thread in the main coin forum somewhere along the lines of toning, and we can all discuss toned coins, because, for you just getting into this, you need to know what Artificially toned And naturally toned is, and how to spot the signs so you do not get jipped or anything, I might have a couple of examples that I could send you and show you the differance. Wow thanks all... and thank you jtwax i really like the 4th 5th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th and 13th nickels in that picture... the purples are ok but im more of a all nice even tone kinda guy i guess heheheh... thanks again all for helping me on this toning.. and Pennycase I do not want to burden you into giving me coins of any kind so i will have to decline your offer but i do greatly appreciate you for wanting to help.
